| weaning problems Ok so this isnt about yorkies. its about my mother-in-laws poodles but i have a yorkie and i love this site so i wanted to ask here as i always get good answers. So here it is Poodle mom had 4 puppies 4 weeks ago today. Over the past few days she has decided she does not want to nurse them anymore at all. We started giving them Royal Canin babydog food mixed with warm water and they were lapping it up like crazy but not so much anymore. I'm a little worried because they dont seem as energetic as i thought they would be at this age. They wont walk to the food on their own so we have been going in there to give it to them but they dont seem to be eating it as much as they were. I tried putting it into a blender to make it mushy and also make it very watery. Neither worked. a few of them ate a tiny bit then they were done. so my questions are 1. how often should we be feeding it to them? 2 times a day 3 just leave it out? 2. How do we teach them to go to it? 3. should we leave mom with them and hope she nurses a little or does that hinder the weaning process and should we take her away completely? Any suggestions or advice would be wonderful! thank you!!

| I don't have any experience, but I would think that 4 weeks old is much too young to expect them to find the food on their own and that they need to be fed more than 2 times a day. I'd think they need to be fed every two to three hours - round the clock. Hopefully someone with experience will pop by with better suggestions.

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I'd say 4 weeks is much to early to be weaning them, but I don't have experience with poodles. Are these toy poodle puppies or larger? In any case, I would definitely be putting mom in with those pups making sure she nurses them until you know they are accepting puppy food with no help. I've got a litter of 4 Biewer puppies that are 7 weeks old and they are just within the last week no longer nursing. They try at times, but mom mostly says "no way" anymore. They are all eating small dry kibble just fine.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Mom should be still feeding them at this point, but you can start adding to their diet, when I start weaning i do with, goats milk and soft puppy food for at least a couple of weeks, 5 times a day.. then I add to that grounded puppy kibble, and a drop of Karo syrop to their water, I had a girl that started weaning her pups at 5 weeks and the pups did really well with this mixture, my chanel will feed her litter until 6 weeks , after that she wants nothing to do with feeding them or cleaning their pen, but she still wants to be around them, to correct them and play with them, I usually put a baby onesie on her to keep them off her, and only let them nurse at night until they are about 7 weeks.. hugs, Last edited by carmen in nj; 02-04-2012 at 12:05 PM. |
