For the breeders here..... if your stud's owner is taking pick of the litter, how long do you usually allow them to make their decision? It's a little hard to let the other people on my waiting list know what's available until he lets me know which one he wants. Last time we paid him a stud fee so I haven't had to deal with this situation before. Just wondering what is "normal".

Actually this should have been discussed with the stud owner and put into the breeding contract before the breeding. If the pups are being evaluated for show then I would not expect the stud owner to pick until the pups are about 12 weeks. Sometimes it is easier to decide sooner, it always depends on what sex the stud owner wants and how many there are to choose from. With a larger litter it can be harder to choose.

I'll have to look over his contract again but I don't think it was specific as to what age he would be picking. They are only 1 week old so we have time, I was just wondering. They are not for "show" but for herding/competition type stuff so there's really no way to know how well they will train until they are older so he'll basically just be picking by sex and color. Given the bloodlines though, they will all do excellent in that field (as her last litter is proving now). We have two different colored females for him to choose from (he at least knows he wants females) so that narrows it down a bit.

Actually Barb, if the pup is being picked for show evaluation and pick isn't done until the very minimum of 16 weeks if not later and that is usually with an experienced exhibitor.

Again, it is up to the individuals involved. Ideally the longer you can wait the better. In some cases if someone wants a female and there is only one to choose from then they don't have to wait that long.

I would think that temperament and personality is important in choosing a working dog so I would imagine they would need to be at least 10 week to tell much about their personalities.

I prelim'd a pick at 6 wks, then waited until after temperament test was done, went back out to breeder's, at 7+ wks, watched pups again, reviewed results of temperament tests. At eight wks I made my selection and took my boy home. Temperament and personality is very important in working dogs equally to structure!. It's what I call the the holy trinity. LoL.

But this was for a large breed dog.

I have only used a stud twice for a pick back to the breeder..both were show breeders and both were very kind to take their pick at 12 weeks. One clarified before breeding she wanted pick female...and since there were 3 males and one female, the choice was simple.

When I had studs, I agreed to the sex and age before breeding. As a rule I asked for a female by 12 weeks...never liked the lock a breeder into waiting for months and months...one friend got stuck keeping 4 males for 9 months...never get in a contract like that...

This is our Aust. Shep. litter. He only has 3 females to pick from.... either red merle or black. He prefers the prick ears like Mom's so that may narrow it down. Again given the bloodlines, all should train very well. I guess it may depend mostly on if he plans to breed her and which color he needs for his breeding program. I couldn't imagine holding off the other people on our waiting list for several months though. I'm sure he'll make his decision soon. I just posted the question because I was curious as to what was standard. Of course with Yorkies they don't leave home as soon as these probably will.

I think it was a good question. It gives those that are considering breeding their males or females to someone else's dog or bitch something to think about. I love Australian Shepherds. Are yours AKC? I am not sure many different registries there are for them but I know I hardly ever see any for sale that are AKC registered. They are beautiful dogs. Do you enter yours in herding competition? It is amazing watching them work.

Our's are AKC and ASCA (Aust Shep Club of America). We don't have very many cattle to put Stormie on very often but when we do she's amazing. So no we don't do competition with her but the stud (2nd time using him) does competitions often and is very good. With her last litter we had 2 go to Germany and the buyer is a nationwide exhibitioner and competitor so I can't wait to see how those 2 do. It's very rewarding to see all the pups progressing so well in their training. It has come so naturally to all of them. I know Stormie would be proud if she understood any of it. ;-)

My in-laws used to raise and train border collies. It was amazing watching them work sheep. Good luck with you babies; they sound wonderful.

I understand larger breeds going sooner...I knew a Dane and Boxer show breeder..both could pick at 6 to 8 weeks what to keep...amazes me..but one thing for sure a Dane and a Boxer stay the color they were born..no guessing in that area.
