| Need help with new pup To start I am not a breeder. I took in a breeder surrender and found out she was pregnant. That was 6 weeks ago. Her baby boy was born last night. He weighed in at 4oz which is apparently fine. I am worried about mommy. She has been panting a lot today, but refuses to drink. Is this normal? I have never had any of my babies give birth and am totally lost. I don't have kids myself so I cannot even relate. Puppy seems to be nursing, but is more vocal than I expected. Every time Julie moves he whines. Is her panting normal and do newborns whine frequently if the mom moves? |

| If you have an ER vet near by I would take them for a check up to be on the safe side. How long ago did she have the pup ? are you sure there aren't any more in there ? |

| She had three ultrasounds and two x-rays so only one puppy was expected. |

| Good job on the pics. Can you call the ER and ask what they think ? I have Never had a PG dog so don't know what they should or shouldn't do. I do know that I would deff be taking them in If I were in your shoes and not knowing what I was doing. It's better to be safe then risk loosing them both. I have read & heard some things that can go wrong can kill MaMa in a matter of a few short hrs so you should at least give the ER a call & they could probably tell you what to watch for. |

| Since your sure there aren't any more pups to deliver by previous x-ray, thats the first to rule out. It is normal for a new Mom to pant for a few days after whelping. As the pup nurses and natural hormone releases, the uterus will continue to contract back down to pre-whelp size. With these contractions, she will pant. However, to be on the safe and prudent side. Take her temperature, rectally. Be sure its in normal range..101-102 degrees. Make sure she doesn't have a foul smelling or green tinged discharge and any obvious signs of excess bleeding. Its worrisome that she isn't drinking...you can try putting half a teaspoon of sugar to 1 cup of water and offer it...if she isn't interested, try putting in a syringe and giving directly to her. If all is normal with temp, discharge right now and she refuses to drink by sun up, I would definately call your vet. New pups will sometimes be little yackers when Mom moves..They have a "startle" reflex that will cause them to cry with movement in the beginning....some are just louder than others You did say the little boy is nursing fine, right?

| Many times a new Mom won't eat or drink on their own. It's usually that they won't get up from the baby to do it. I take a the bowl of water and put it right under the Mom's nose. Sometimes they still won't drink so I put my fingers in the water and push the water up to the mouth and they'll lap it off my fingers. She really must drink, not only for her sake but to produce milk. They can be really picky with their food for a few days, too. I keep some boiled chicken on hand, also some boiled beef liver. I keep the broth, too, and use it with their food. Even using this, you may have to hand feed her, especially at first. It's really a matter of having a few things on hand as what they like one day they may not like another. Scrambled eggs is another good thing to feed them. Kibble is usually not something mine want for the first few days, but you can try feeding a little kibble mixed with either the liver or chicken and some canned food and use the broth with it. The little packages of Cesar seems to be one food that most picky Moms will eat, so you may want a few containers of that on hand. The pup will need his tail docked and dew claws removed between days 3 to 5. Your pup sounds like a good weight, so if he's thriving, Tuesday would be a good time to go since he was born on Friday night. Call your vet today and see about scheduling an appointment. A word about tail docking. Many vets don't know the breed standard for docking Yorkies' tails and will dock them too short. I have my vet cut the tail at about 3/16 inch beyond where the brown ends on the underside of the tail. You don't want a nubby tail. Keep the pup warm on the trip to the vet. Since there's only one pup, you can use a small box and put a towel in it. Warm the towel in the dryer for a minute before leaving and don't let any drafts get on him. Hope this helps to get you started. Best of luck.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Panting helps her milk come in and yes, puppies cry. Breezeway is correct about the heating pad also. Look for one that does not have an automatic shut off, place a blanket placed over it and keep it on low. If you are uncertain the placenta was delivered you need to take the mom to the vet's today and get a oxytocin shot to "clean" her out. She will get deathly ill if a placenta was retained and you do not. Be sure to check her breasts daily. If any get lumpy or hard...she may be developing mastitis which is an infection which requires immediate veteraninary care. Mom should be given either a calcium supplement or calcium rich foods as nursing depletes the calcuim stored in their bodies. This is given to prevent eclampsia. Just a few things to watch out for and not hope I didn't scare you.

| when a puppy is born, the mama's uterus will continue to contract for a few hours. this will cause panting. As others have said, it is also normal for her to not want to eat or drink but you will have to make sure she does. The baby could be crying for any number of reasons. My guess would be that it is cold so the heating pad advice is good OR her milk is not in yet and it is hungry. Can you give us an update. Good luck. |

| Puppies will cry if they are cold or hungry. I like to put a heating pad under half of the bed, that way the puppy can go to it if it is too cold, but get off of it if it is too hot and Mom doesn't have to lay on it. Moms get very warm when their milk lets down and they will pant. You can syringe some water to her . I also give my new mommas some melted ice cream Good Luck |

Other's have given great advice. Calcium supplements may or not be given, but usually not necessary with a litter of one, but always advisable with a litter of 3 or more. I would suggest keeping Oral Cal Plus on hand in case of an emergency animalrevival.com.....that is if eclampsia should manifest itself in your girl. There are a couple of whelping recipes, posted as stickies at the top of the breeder forum. A pup usually will only whine when it is chilled. More than likely that is why your pup cries when mom moves.

| The others advice on keeping the pup warm is extremely important to remember. It will be a couple of weeks before he can maintain his body temp. With him being the only one, he doesn't have anyone to snuggle with to keep warm except for his Mom. Also, do watch out for engorged teats. With only one nursing, she is likely to have this happen. You'll want to watch for lumpy, swollen, hard teats. He probably will pick one or two favorites and the others will not get drained. You can hand express the milk to relieve the pressure and she should be able to self-regulate after that. If not, you may need to express them more.

| Do I have to dock his tail? Is there a sanitary reason or just cosmetic? |
