| Mommy nursing question Krystal seems to have no problem nursing and plenty of milk. But I've notice that her teets and the area around them seems almost bruised. Maybe that's the wrong word, the skin around the teets seem darker and somewhat red. Is there something I can do for her to ease this as I don't want her to get sore and not want to nurse the puppies. Is this normal? Any input is welcome, I'm just thinking of my girl. Dion

| in My experience, this is normal. when my girls are nursing, any time they get up beside me, i rub some cool (not cold) water on her belly to ease the 'burning' redness (i'm assuming it is quite hot). vet-nurse sugested it. as long as the puppies claws are short enough, she should be fine feeding them until weaning time with minimal discomfortn (at which point maybe some sudocream could be rubbed on her- but only once the pups are completely finished as its not really made for consumption!). congrats on the babies and hope momma n all keep doing great!

| usually i'd check the puppies nails first at about 5 days; all puppies nails seem to grow at different rates, so its just a case of checking them during the weighing each time -and if they seem too long, file them down a bit with a normal sandpaper type nail file... just be careful not to get too close to the quick- basically just taking the razor sharpness off them... hope this helps!

| Make sure that the pups nails are not too long and scratching her. Also, make them alternate which one they are feeding off of. It seems to me like pups generally go for the same teats every time. Make them swap up. |

| Make sure you check the momma's teats for hardness. If they become hard or lumpy then that is a sign of mastitis. I just use a finger nail clipper to cut the puppies toenails. I just snip off the sharp points. You can tell by feeling of them when they are getting sharp.
