| Question? I have a question for some of you, I noticed yesterday that there was a person who posted about the breeding of a Yorkie and a Dachshund, and I noticed how many of you didn't agree and expressed that to her openly (I agreed 100% with that fact that the breeding should have never taken place) but I've also noticed that a lot of people her breed their pet Yorkies (accidents on occasion but a lot of you breed on purpose). I know there is a difference between the breeding of mutts vs. the breeding of purebreds but the fact that some people here do breed there pets that don't follow up with the breed standard has got to have been noticed, shelters aren't just filled with mutts you know. I for one am the person that if your dog isn't standard then it shouldn't be bred. Working bred dogs are an exception for me though. I just wanted to know the YT breeders take on this? Do you agree with the breeding of non-standard pet yorkies? I for one don't, but just wanted to here from both sides of the fence as to why you do or don't agree. |

| I personally do not agree with breeding dogs that are not going to adhere to the standard. JMO. |

| Nice to know . I just see SO many people on this fourm that breed there dogs (with no homes lined up obviously, because look at the for sale page, I mean I know some sales fall threw but come on, they should have aleast had some homes lined up for the pups or should have had some interest) and I never see a mention of health testing either. Not to say all YTers are like that because I know that wouldn't be true, we have some GREAT YT breeders here, but you know. . . |

| Yes, luckily not all of the YT members here who breed fit that description. And wouldn't you know it, those who don't are usually the 'go to' people when there is a problem or people need help. Speaks volumes, eh? |

| If it was humanly possible to "make" a Yorkie much the same as making a dress...and it was achieved by using the standard for each part..then you would have a perfect Yorkie...and if breeders were only allowed to use Yorkies that adhere 100% to the standard, there would be few litters bred. All Yorkies have some type of fault, some more obvious then others.. So reputable breeders strive to breed a Yorkie that is as close to the standard as humanly possible..this is not achieved by using pets as stock. I used to breed one of my bitches who was an AKC champion and ALL 100% her family in the next 3 generations were AKC champions...and I bred her to the number one Yorkie in the US at the time...and she had 5 puppies...2 who turned out to be non-show quality pets... What it all boils down to for me is this...if my goal was to breed happy, healthy, well adjusted Yorkies for PETS ONLY...I would still use the very best stock possible..because the best produces pets as well as show dogs. If you sincerely love a breed, you do all possible to preserve it...by mixing it or using poor quality stock you are not an asset to the breed, but one who destroys it. |

| Breeding mixed breeds or "designer" breeds makes me ill! If one is going to breed, research ONE breed to the fullest, and stick with ONE. Breed to the standard of that breed, do the proper testing whether it is required by a "club" or not. If one is breeding for "pet only" use the best stock you can afford.

| I have to agree with YorkieRose....why breed a pet? One should always breed close to standard as possible and "ALWAYS" health test!!! Health is of the utmost importance in my opinion and when you don't breed for health and as close to the standard as possible I truly believe that is why many people have problems and health issues. Yes, does a health issue crop up "ABSOLUTELY" but it's what a "GOOD" "REPUTABLE" breeder does when that happens. Donna |

Its just I see many people on YT who breed their yorkies who aren't even remotely standard, haven't been health tested (not just a vet check either like OFA, CERF, Patellas, etc). They breed because they want there "precious baby" to have babies. | |

| I am not a breeder, but totally agree. I would only buy from a Reputable breeder, and I would want it from the best of the rest. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I have to agree with Bama, Pat and Donna on this one.I also want to add that Breeding only the Yorkies that are as close to the standard as possible is what should be done. But as you have seen not everyone follows those guidlines. I have lost count of the many posts I have seen since first coming to this forum of the countless accidents and on purpose breedings done by people that do what they want and don't care about this breed at all. Yes everyone had to start somewhere but when you have people that have dedicated their lives to adhering to the standard by research and years of breeding giving advice and telling people what they need to do in order to be a responsible and reputable breeder and then have it thrown back in their faces that they were being rude or coming down on a person for wanting to breed, I can understand their reasoning for not wanting to say too much. I have only been breeding for a few years and showing for 2 yrs so when these ladies have something to say I listen. But because I am constantly doing research I rarely ask questions on this Forum. I do have mentors that I go to and talk to on a constant basis. Breeding is not an overnight hobby, you can't just read a few books and think you know all about breeding. It doesn't work that way You need guidance from an experienced person, read anything and everything you can find on breeding , then ask yourself why you want to be a breeder.
