| Another sleepless night..... Im awake at almost 3 AM because this is what we are going thru right now......So I have 2 lil boys and a girl. Sookie, my girl is going thru her first heat. The boys are going nuts. I keep sookie away from them but they are just whining and whining for her. They both keep trying to mount her when she is around....she starts fighting them off. My question is this....are the boys always gonna try to be mounting her now or is this because of her first heat right now? One of the boys is scheduled to be neutered. Is that going to help? |

You don't want babies the first heat so keep them separate all the time...behind closed locked door. They can get pregnant without a tie. I know my girl is in labor right now..never got a tie with my male an her. She is due 3 puppies.

| Why are you allowing your boys to mount her?? She is too young and also tow males at once!! Yikes! Not a good idea, if you want to register the pups - you won't know who the sire is. You need to keep them seperated in seperate parts of the house. It will help a bit with the noise and accidents can happen. Neutering will help - but he may act like he can if she is still in heat. This is not good for him right after surgery. It takes a little while for him to loose the urge (if the female is still in heat). |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | They are trying to mount her because she is in heat. If you don't want a pregnancy you need to keep them separated.....at all times. That means separate rooms, separate potty breaks. That "trying to mount" will turn into a successful tie in the blink of an eye, eve with you right there, seriously. Don't take any chances if you don't want an oops pregnancy.

| Thanks for posting your problem..it is a perfect example of one area people overlook when deciding to become a breeder. My males were not allowed to mingle with females..unless invited by me. They had a separate play and sleeping area..the yard was fenced into several safe play/potty areas..a door from the boys area lead outside, so there were no accidents along the way... If no girls are in season, then it is ok for males to have play time..but IMO to give females and males free range of the house only leads to problems...scan the threads and count the accidents.. I know you are keeping your males separate...but when they are in the yard, smelling where your female has peed and marked...it will only make matters worse...who wants to listen to males whine and bark for weeks at a time? Good Luck to you |

| I have two boys. When my girls go into heat, one of my boys is fairly content to be in his crate or expen. When I say fairly content, I mean he only whines fairly quietly for several hours every day. My other boy is a different story. He loves to sing to the girls. He will whine, cry, bark and eventually throws his head back and howls like a wolf. This usually starts all of my dogs howling, girls too. It is quite a scene for a couple of weeks. Ah, the joys of being a breeder. I always think that one has to be slightly nuts to do this. Just another thing, having a girl in heat with two boys in the house can cause a fight to break out between the boys, even if they usually get along quite well at other times.

I am planning too.....I wanted to geive her at least until her first year to give her time to grow....but she is 11 months old and not hitting the 4 lb mark yet so I dont think she is going to get to a breeding size. On the other hand Ace gained his last pound righ around his first birthday and that brought him to 5 lbs. Yay! But on Sookie...I dont get that feeling that she will make it to 5lbs and even at 5 lbs im not so sure I would be ok breeding her. For breeding Id prefer 5.5lbs. I have been studying, reading, researching, forum lurking about breeding yorkies for 18 months and still have much to learn. for example another poster said I couldnt even take them out for potty breaks together even supervised. I thought just keeping them seperated in the house was enough! Im learning though and dont plan on breeding until Im confident enough that I know what im doing, regardless if my dogs are ready or not. I also plan on working with a mentor before I decide to start a breeding program. I think it would be much more beneficial to my yorkies and I if I experience the whole thing with someone else who is experienced with conception, whelping, after care, etc. Its just this is Sookies first heat ( and mine as well in regards to yorkies, was that gross? Sorry. Just saying Im a newbie.) so its a learning experience for me as far as how all my yorkies act. Sorry if this was long! | |

| A neutered male can still breed a females so even if your have your boys neutered you will need to keep them separated from your girl when she is in heat. If you have no intentions of breeding her then I recommend you have her spay before her next heat. Remember that the heat cycle last 3 whole weeks so you will need to keep her away from the boys about 4 weeks to be safe. Keeping the female out of sight of the boys will be your best option for keeping them calmer but even with that they will probably still act crazy. |
