Ovulation Day in a heat cycle I recenty bred my female yorkie. She was not receptive to the male until her 14th day of heat. Would this mean she is a late ovulator or did she miss her ovulation. If she where pregnant (she would only be about 9 days) would her vulva start to deminsion is size and then swell whens she was further along in her pregnancy or would it continue to swell after she was done with her heat cycle. Also another question. She has produced little sores around her vulva since she was breed. My female and the male I bred her with has never been bred before. Can dogs catch anything from another dog, even if they had never bred with another dog before. Any knowlegde would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm sure you know just because the girl is receptive to a stud on a certain day and you've bred her, isn't necessarily that day she concieves. She may also ovulate before she is willing to accept the male. So, one has nothing to do with the other. There are a couple of ways to determine when she is ovulating.....Ovulation testing by your veterinarian is the key to determining the correct breeding time. There is a device developed in Poland, called an Ovulation Detector. The device is extremely accurate. Tests the vaginal secretions and tells you when ovulation is near, when the exact day to breed is, whether or not it's a false heat, etc. But, it's pretty pricey

Yes the 14th day from the first day she showed color. She was not bleeding much if any that day. What little she has was a very light pinkish in color. I do know about the vet ovulation procedure. I didn't want that expense at this time. I'm new to all of this. I have research so much for the past three years, but something always catches you off guard when you are learning. Does the swelling of her vulva tell me anything . She has lost some of the swelling in the last few days. Last edited by yorkiemom11; 03-28-2010 at 04:20 PM.

The vet ovulation is taking her in daily and his running hormone tests. Sorry, but at times this has to be done, one of the expenses of being a breeder. I usually run my girls in as soon as they begin swelling, for Brucellosis test and for a smear to insure there is no other infection. I have a girl that was bred on her 2nd day of showing color....that was she went soft on me...I ran her in for the test and sure enough she was ovulating......However, when a girl is ovulating prior to being receptive, the only way to have her bred is AI. For the next time around....I suggest you take a breeding class...it sure clears up a lot of things.....

A breeding class?? Where do I find one of those. I hadn't run across one of those class yet. Do most breeder take their dogs in for a Brucella test regularly. The sores on her vulva didnt come until after I bred her, wouldn't that have meant she picked up something at the male breeder house?? I check this breeder out so well I though I had my bases covered. I still don't know what the little sores are, they are going away. But probably should have her checked by a vet. We did try to have her AI but she would have not part of that. That is why we just left her and the male to do it themselves, with supervision. Thanks for all your information, you have been very helpful.

Most females are very receptive to AIkng.... As far as breeding/whelping/genetic seminars/classes, they can be sponsored by Kennel Clubs.....or you can do a google search....
