Eclampsia My female has had her second litter 3 days ago and came down with Eclampsia on Friday. She had a very severe case. I had to take her back to the vet again today because she started shaking again. She had no problem with her last litter everything was perfect. The only thing different this time was I had a really hard time getting her to eat. I was always under the impression when they had eclampsia to never breed them again. Especially when it is severe. I have had a few people tell me that is not true. I have never had to experience this before so ANY advise would be helpful. She is on Calcium supplement liquid diet ( because she won't hardly eat or drink) and liquids with electrolytes. I am so sacred for her. I have sent to her puppies to a surrogate mom and she is devastated. She keeps looking for her pups and gets extremely upset. I have stuffed animals in her playpen with her and she keeps trying to nurse them. It makes me so sad to see her like this.

I am sorry to hear this...I do not take the pups from the dam. I do not allow them to nurse, but I allow her to be with them. I used a cover-up garment I made so they could not nurse. If you are going to take the pups away if it reoccurs, I would not breed her..too difficult for her to endure...but with care it may never happen again. I had 3 moms with the problem. One was not bred again, the other two were..never happened again with another litter..but I suppliemented the pups and did not allow mom to be the sole source of milk.

I have never had one with eclampsia (knocking on wood) but a breeder I know has had a few females with this problem. She supplements with calcium (certian kind), eggs, cottage cheese, etc. from the week before whelp till weaned with no luck on those females. She bred a daughter from one and had the same problem. She changed food (was on canidea now on Nutro) and has not had that happen again. She only had the daughter but her second litter had no problem. She was told by the vet to take the pups away as her females would end up in the ER clinic and on IV calcium. I fostered a litter and fed them Firstborn milk replacer from 3 days after birth and they all did great. Mom stopped looking for them within a week. Sorry to hear about your baby. I would ask your vet about the chances of it happening again. I know the vets here say that once they have done it, they have a much greater chance of doing it again.

All I can say is I hope things are going good with the pups and I'm sorry this has happened If I ever have a bitch that has it she would be spayed and not have another litter...I know too many people that has had this happen and has tried it again and the bitch developed it again and it's not worth it to me. I wouldn't risk it at all. I care too much for the bitch to risk her life and the newborn pups. JMHO Donna

Thank you everyone. She is doing great now Thank god! I took her to see the pups on Sunday and she wanted nothing to do with them which I expected. I want to hear all opinions that is why I posted this. As of right now I will never breed her again. But I am going to be doing my research and talking to many vets before I make my finale decision and have her spayed. I have heard soooo many different things it is hard to know but right now I am feeling like she will never be breed again. I am wondering if her not eating well thru her pregnancy is what brought it on.Last time I had her on puppy food this time I did not because I was told by several people there is to much calcium and it could make her have eclampsia. HHMM go figure.... I had to hand feed her most of the time because she just wouldn't eat. That was the ONLY different thing between pregnancies. This pregnancy even had 1 less pup. I want to hear about everyone experiences and what your vet has told you.
