I have never had one with eclampsia (knocking on wood) but a breeder I know has had a few females with this problem. She supplements with calcium (certian kind), eggs, cottage cheese, etc. from the week before whelp till weaned with no luck on those females. She bred a daughter from one and had the same problem. She changed food (was on canidea now on Nutro) and has not had that happen again. She only had the daughter but her second litter had no problem. She was told by the vet to take the pups away as her females would end up in the ER clinic and on IV calcium. I fostered a litter and fed them Firstborn milk replacer from 3 days after birth and they all did great. Mom stopped looking for them within a week. Sorry to hear about your baby. I would ask your vet about the chances of it happening again. I know the vets here say that once they have done it, they have a much greater chance of doing it again. |
