| People in my home??? please respond I am not sure how to feel safe about letting people in my home when it comes to the time for my furbabies to go the their forever homes. I know that I want people to be able to see the enviroment of where their babys are at. There are just so many horror stories of bad things happening. I know that is it a red flag to get a puppy when you can not see the home or parents. I am just wanting to make sure that I keep my family (skin and fur) safe during this time. What are the "red flags" I should look for before I agree to let them come over? I don't want to be paranoid but I am not sure how to handle this. I know I will make sure I am not home alone when I let somone over but that don't protect us (skin and fur) or our property when we are not home. Would it look bad on my part if I meet them at a safe place in town then if I feel comfortable with who they are bring them to my home??? I know I also want to know where my babies are going so, Do you think I could go to there home first and "check them out" ? How do others feel about this? Please respond. |

| You could always make up an application first so you could verify they are " real " honest people, first call to see if they have a vet and call, call thier references, call landlords if it is an apartment rental or home rental. Call to verify thier employment. ( you can say you do this so you know they have a job and can afford pet care). You can also suggest YOU do a home visit prior to letting one of the pups go...or better yet when they fill out the application if its close to you , you and hubby do a drive by to make sure its a real address. I would deffinatly make phone calls prior to letting one of your pups go.

Joey's breeder asked me many questions over the phone before I got a chance to come see her pups. She wanted to know how I disciplined dogs, and I thought that was such a great question. You can learn lots about a person by what type of discipline they believe in. I would never place a dog with someone who I didn't feel right about having in my home. If you are having bad feelings about someone, please don't meet them elsewhere and sell them a pup. Most rescues screen homes thoroughly, and I always recommend breeders this as well. If someone looks elsewhere because you were too choosy, they wouldn't make a good yorkie parent anyway.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I think you are being reasonably cautious. You can also google people to see what comes up on the internet. It is amazing how much information is available out there ... and also somewhat scarey too. When we purchased our first pure bred dog - Magic - we met the breeder 5 times over the course of 2 months. And she lived a 3 hour drive from us. We submitted through application business information, personal information, etc. We really appreciated her care and concern because we had the same. Now a lot of those visits were to see the pups - and we got to evaluate each other over the course of this time. We as purchasers also checked her out with other breeders. Over the course of our 4+year relationship we have become good friends. She is always been there for me, when I've had questions or concerns.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Here's how I do it, it might not be perfect but works for me. I first usually get people calling me or by email, either way I ask the normal questions, and then I send them my contract, if they are serious I setup a phone appt, and we have a chat about breed specifics and puppy needs, I ask for references Vet and Groomer, if first time puppy owners I talk to friends and relatives. if everything goes well then I setup a visit, I only receive people friday, saturda and sunday, When one of my men is home. NEVER, Never while I am home alone, even tho I have Niko the Malamute to defend me.. at the home visit we go thru the contract and they are required to leave a $200.00 deposit, deposit can be cash, check or money order.. for the baby. Balance is due when baby is 12 weeks in CASH. They have to come and pick up the baby in my home by appointmen only. also they have to register the microchip with me as the second contact and provide proof. that is what I do to protect me,my puppy and the buyer. |

| Thank you everybody. I am getting a ton of useful and safety information here. This is helping to make me feel a lot better. I know I am a long way from (a few months) having to deal with this but, I always like to be ready ahead of time. What is a good age to start accepting deposits? I was thinking when they were about 8 weeks then I feel comfortable about people looking and maybe a lil bit of handling of the pups. That will also give "us" a good month to get to know each other before the puppy is ready to leave me. |

| Selling anything out of your home, puts you at risk for crooks, so it would be wise to install a live cam, make sure you set up the appointment when your husband or another male can be there in an adjoining room (just in case) and of course have a contract drawn up to protect yourself and the puppies, and also the buyer.
