Put on a pair of latex gloves and apply a liberal amount of lubricant (such as KY Jelly) to the tip of your index finger. Carefully insert one finger into the bitch’s vulva and gently move your finger along the top of her vagina -- or “feather” the area. This will help stimulate involuntary uterine contractions. At this point that is what I would do.

| Donating YT 2000 Club Member | putting your finger in her is not going to harm the pups as long as you have a sterile glove and gentle do it. If the cervix is closed you can not touch the pup. I know of alot of breeders have to put fingers in to help get the pup out when they get stuck. It is no more harmful than a vaginal exam your vet did this morning. It may help her get on a harder contraction pattern and bring these puppies on

That is if the finger goes in easy. If you start to insert it and hit something back out.. if not gently rub the top of her vagina for atleat a minute. I found this online.. "you can try a technique called "feathering." Put on a pair of latex gloves and apply a liberal amount of lubricant (such as KY Jelly) to the tip of your index finger. Carefully insert one finger into the bitch’s vulva and gently move your finger along the top of her vagina -- or “feather” the area. This will help stimulate involuntary uterine contractions. "

| Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I found this to on whelping a litter site "When labor is going without issue, there is little need for assistance on your part. However, if labor continues for an hour or so without producing a puppy, it is a good idea to take the bitch outside for a quick walk. Be careful though, often this type of physical movement by the bitch can cause a puppy to be expelled unexpectedly. If a short walk does nothing to stimulate birth, you can try a technique called "feathering." Put on a pair of latex gloves and apply a liberal amount of lubricant (such as KY Jelly) to the tip of your index finger. Carefully insert one finger into the bitch’s vulva and gently move your finger along the top of her vagina -- or “feather” the area. This will help stimulate involuntary uterine contractions. Assuming labor continues normally, the contractions will come faster and the bitch will start pushing more forcefully. The next thing to expect is the bitch’s water to break. The water sac that protects the unborn puppies in the uterus will most likely break and discharge onto the floor. Care should be exercised when choosing a birthing area so that such events are easily remedied. Under normal circumstances, once the bitch’s water has broken the first puppy should be delivered within 15-20 minutes. "

| No puppies yet....hmmm. Calcium also stimulates uterine contractions. Some breeders use Tums instead of calcium supplements. You might try crushing one up and putting it in a tablespoon of the whelping mixture you made earlier. The other way I've used calcium before is to allow mom to eat at least part of the first afterbirth, but add a calcium tablet to it. This helps keep the labor going for the rest of the puppies.

| My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Oh wow, hope all is well with your girl. Just read through your thread while my girl whelped her pups. I seen the pic way back there of the "buldge" and I do have to say that looked just like mine before the pup comes out. Is that buldge still there? That worried me! Just got me thinking while mine were being born. Hope all is ok! Can you take another pic of her privates so we can see if it looks ok? Will be wishing you a healthy, safe whelp! |
