| 1st time breeding for a mature male? I have a male that I haven't used until a few months ago. He is one of my puppies that I never sold. I haven't used him because his father is my breeder. He is over 2 years old now and has a most wonderous coat. I wanted to breed him to see if his coat could be passed on. I chose a female who also has a nice coat. I never saw them tie but I had them in the cage together the whole time so they could have tied when I wasn't watching. No puppies were born. The female didn't get pregnant. Is it possible that he doesn't know how to do it? I saw them trying to tie but like I said, they didn't tie in front of me. Sylvia |

However, how you proceeded with the breeding is not the proper way to breed. A bitch can ruin a stud, not only physically but, mentally. I will tell you that AKC frowns upon unsupervised/free breedings. And should they a rep ever visit your home, that is one of their trick questions. In other words active participation is necessary, preferrably 2 people. One holding and guiding the male, the other holding and calming the female. This method would ensure that the female could not drag the male around and render him injured....... There are also other factors that figure into the process and would require other info on your invironmental conditions. You mentioned you chose these two because of coat quality.....are there other attributes that your stud has that your female doesn't. Maybe earset, topline, temperament, tailset, etc.

I didn't think of that, it was indeed her first breeding. I don't usually leave them alone when breeding them. They were actually in my bedroom with me in their cage but they could have tied while I was asleep. I guess they didn't. No other attributes, they are both the same size, good toplines, sweet temperments, both good looking dogs. They look like a good match. Sylvia | |

When picking your stud for your female....look at your female with a very critical eye.....(there is no perfect dog), pick a stud that will complement her.....know their pedigrees backward and forwards.........you are pulling in 3 generations into that breeding. So, what you see in front of you is not what you're going to get.....that is unless you stud has the ability to reproduce hisself.

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I never leave mine unattended. I hold the female and assist the male if needed. Some may need guiding, some may need a boost, some are just fine and are able to do their job with me just holding my female. If they tie, even if in a pen..the female can hurt the male or even vise versa, so its best to always assist, plus then you know for sure that there is a tie and you can then calculate an expected whelp date too Will you try the pair again? Well wishes to their next breeding! |
