I never saw them tie but I had them in the cage together the whole time so they could have tied when I wasn't watching. No puppies were born. The female didn't get pregnant.

Is it possible that he doesn't know how to do it? I saw them trying to tie but like I said, they didn't tie in front of me. Sylvia
Was the female also a maiden. Breeding an unproven stud and a maiden bitch is a very difficult endeavor.

However, how you proceeded with the breeding is not the proper way to breed. A bitch can ruin a stud, not only physically but, mentally. I will tell you that AKC frowns upon unsupervised/free breedings. And should they a rep ever visit your home, that is one of their trick questions. In other words active participation is necessary, preferrably 2 people. One holding and guiding the male, the other holding and calming the female. This method would ensure that the female could not drag the male around and render him injured.......

There are also other factors that figure into the process and would require other info on your invironmental conditions.

You mentioned you chose these two because of coat quality.....are there other attributes that your stud has that your female doesn't. Maybe earset, topline, temperament, tailset, etc.
