| I Failed At My First Attempt To Breed I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it, it's all too new . . .my major feeling right now is disappointment. I've read and asked questions and bought this awesome book by Muriel Lee and studied and asked more questions and then it came time . . .and I failed . . .now all these what if's and I must of done this wrong . . .are all popping in my head . . . We had two really good attempts . . .10/12 and 10/14 . . .which was Rhianna's 10th and 12th day of her cycle . . .both of my babies are virgins . . .and we achieved no tie . . .I know that there was a better shot of her getting pregnant with a tie, but I was hoping it would work without one . . . I thought she was exhibiting signs of pregnancy . . .slightly swollen vulva, nipples larger, moodiness . . . I had her palpitated yesterday by my vet and he felt nothing. He explained that maybe it was too soon and he's been wrong in the past and told me to wait another week and have her palpitated again or have an ultrasound he also said she might be experiencing a false pregnancy. . .I am going to wait another week and see if I notice anymore changes. I felt pretty sure was pregnant, now I just don't know what to think . .

| Aw, I'm sorry. I know how disappointing this must be, but just know that there will be other opportunities. Maybe you missed the days she was ovulating, perhaps? Was she flagging for a male at the time of breeding? I guess it could be a number of things, really. But I'd hold out and keep a little bit of hope until the next vet appointment. Who knows, maybe it did take without a tie. But honestly, I thought that a pair had to tie in order to have a pregnancy. Hang in there. |

| Yes. She was flagging and standing for him . . .I was able to hold her for him but neither are experienced and I think he was just all over the place the first time. The second attempt I brought them up on my bed because with the tile and hardwood floors he just couldn't get the leverage, but we still didn't achieve a tie.

It's very difficult to breed to virgins.....almost an impossibility. The young stud is too excited, and if his numerous attempts miss the mark, there is frustration on his part. Then the maiden, though she stands and flags doesn't know how to entice the stud. The one time I attempted it, every time the stud would get to the point of hitting the mark, the bitch would let out a yelp....he'd back away....his ego wounded. The best option would have been to AI. It is always best to put a maiden with an experienced stud and visa versa. Here's hoping your vet could be wrong but, if not, I think the next time you'll be successful, if it doesn't work....AI.

My sister had also suggested AI. She bred yorkies many years ago, then she bred shelties . . .she had her sheltie AI because of the same issues that I am having . . .but I really haven't researched that idea at all, so I don't know much about it. Another issue maybe is that Rhianna goes into heat like clockwork quarterly, this was her third heat, so it's another possibility that maybe she isn't fertile every heat. I did feel bad for Brody because he really tried, but tying just wasn't happening for him. . .

Remember the bitch initiates the tie...she's the one that determines how long the tie is going to last by relaxing her muscles.....so, your boy may have done all the right things.....it may have been her. If you're unsure of Rhianna's fertility have your vet do ovulation testing. In some cases the bitch make ovulate before she is willing to accept the male, in those cases, artificial insemmination may be the only answer.

| That happened to me the first time too. Well, I had an experienced stud but he and Zoe were only able to tie one time briefly. So the next time, I pulled out all the stops. All kinds of testing, progesterone testing every few days the whole thing. Even brought them to the vet for ai and the stud was too nervous and that night they were able to tie FINALLY! She had a very nice litter. I know how disappointing it is! I kept hoping that the ultrasound was wrong and held out a small glimmer of hope right until the end. But the next time, things went so well and I hope that happens for you too. I don't know why it didn't work the first time but I think maybe Zoe just needed more maturity.... |

| How old is the male? He might not be fertile himself (not common, but a possibility).
