It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Lacie has no milk yet We've been to the vet twice today...whew. what a day it has been! Lacie has been trying to nurse the five pups born yesterday morning but she is not producting any milk. We've never had this trouble before. I had feed them three times during the night and they are all strong and healthly. I called the vet first thing this morning. She said she had the start of mastitis and put her on Clavamox. Also she (my vet) gave her a show of Oxytocin and sent another one home for four hours later. She had not passed any thing and still had not produced milk by 3 pm so back in we went. The vet took an xray to be sure the lump in her was NOT another puppy. No bones showed in xray so it may be a placenta left in her. She gave her one more shot of Oxytocin and sent us back home and we are to call tomorrow if she still has not passed anything or does not have milk yet. Has anyone had experience with either mastitis or placentas not passing. Advice is welcome. Lacie is feeling well, eating, drinking ok. Anything that would help her to produce milk??

| I'm sorry you haven't gotten help before now. I have had females delay in getting placentas out. They are supposed to be able to absorb it... but usually get an infection of the Uterus.. Is she draining good? Pyometra is a scare if she quits draining. Be sure to take her temp morning and evening. Pyometra is a very dangerous infection of the Uterus. As far as Mastitis, I've not had to deal with that, but you're Clavamox should take care of it. I would have my Vet give her an injection of antibiotic to get ahead of things, and continue with the Clavamox. I have a paste like stuff that my Vet gave me to bring in milk.. However, It's in a container with no name on it. I can call her tomorrow and find out what it is. It works great! Until then, how about a warm moist wash cloth on her belly. Keep watching for the end of a cord to try to get the placenta out.. That will help her. Sounds like you're in for "one of those" litters.. that drive you crazy! Feel free to call me at any time, if you have any questions.. 660-686-3330 Last edited by Amazing Yorkies; 10-05-2009 at 07:36 PM. |

| I have had some expierence with mastitis. I had a breeder tell me to put cold cabbage leaves on the teat and keep it there with a sock, like a compress. It really helped bring the swelling down for Ellie. She only got it in one teat, and it worked great. She also told me to express any of the pus that I could through the nipple. It helped it to drain. She also told me to get some ph strips to test it. You want it to read yellow. If it reads purple, then the drainage is still toxic and not to let the babies drink from that nipple. However, once it turns yellow, basically no reaction on the paper, the babies could drink from that nipple again. I hope that this information helps. Ellie was also put on antibotics which didn't hurt the babies at all.

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | thank you girls I want to thank Deb and Blancia for answering some questions/concerns for me. Since they were the only two to help. My puppies are now 1 week old and all doing fine. Lacie doesn't seem to have enough milk but I am supplimenting the feeding several times a day. Lacie has been given 5 oxytoxin shots to help bring in milk, but is still not producting enough. She is nursing 5 pups between the sizes of 4-5 oz each. any other advice at this point for us? THANK YOU DEB FOR THE PHONE CALL...it was wonderful talking with you.

| Sometimes people don't post replies because they don't have any suggestions other than to take her to the vet and you had already done that. I'm sorry that you are having trouble. I hope she gets milk soon. One of my mothers got sick and lost her milk, fortunately I had one that had just weaned her puppies and still had milk. I put the puppies on her several times a day, but they also nursed on mom, and after she got to feeling better, her milk came back. |
