thank you, I have the distilled water and karo but the only goats milk i have is the powder one, because I use it for the weaning of the puppies. |
QUESTION: Can we use formula instead of goats milk? I have goats milk but today is the expiration date. It's never been opened and always in the fridge....should I use it? Ok, I'm new....but I think it may happen tonight. She has been on a blanket by me on the couch all evening....breathing fast but not panting...she shifted a few times like she wasn't comfy...could be nothing...but maybe. She's in her whelping box now. i put it and made a bed by it in the computer room.... EDIT: She just was digging a bit in her box.....then she lay down. |
Sending good vibes for a fast and safe whelping, I would not use that expired milk, can you send hubby to get you some more? I had never used the store formula, my mentor does not like it, she said that in some cases is causes diarreah. hugs, Carmen in nj |

This store formula you mentioned....are you talking about human baby formula....or puppy. I bought some "just born" or something like that. No good? |
I'm fairly certain she is getting ready to have them. She insists on being in her whelping box...normally she follows me everywhere. She was digging and biting her blanket in there. She is not impressed with me rubbing her tummy. She did eat when she heard me open the can but went straight back in her box. I looked at her vulva...there is a little smackle of goop there but don't know what it is cause she fidgets if I try and wipe it. With my luck this isn't it....but she is acting very odd. Can someone tell me if this seems right for her belly.....it is rock hard and the babies are moving but nothing like yesterday. I can feel them fidget....but not tumbling or anything like that. You can pretty much see where the pups have themselves in there. |

Praying for a fast and safe whelp!!! Keep us posted. Sounds like she is very close!:) |
Definitely sounds like she is in the first stages. I pray that you have a safe whelp. |
Thank you everyone. So far....she still refuses to come out of the box. She periodically gets up...shifts the blankets then lays down again. I took her out for a pee but other than that she has been in there for 6 hours straight. Should I take her for a walk? |

Just watch her.. Tara went from doing that to pushing.. no in between. I wouldn't take her to far from the house. you don't want her to get down the road and start pushing. |
Sending lots of prayers your way for a safe whelp... please update us when you can.. hugs, CArmen in nj |

Lol...oh my. That would not be good. So far....she just won't venture out of her whelping box. No other changes that I haven't mentioned yet. I did get her to come out twice for some food....and a pee/poo. I will keep you updated....could be a while tho :( |

However, some may not, for whatever reason, advice to second stage......if first stage continues too long....you might want to put a call into your vet and/or take her in. |

Basically...if first stage includes contractions and panting...she's not there yet...do I need to worry that she's been in her box since early morning with no visible progression? |
I had a new litter a couple of days ago, mom started trying to hide and get away from the other dogs around 1 p.m. in the afternoon. Her first pup was not delivered until around 9:30 p.m. |

Also, I have been fooled many times when I swore a female was in labor and I stayed up all night and nothing happened. It can get very frustrating. |

I would say she is rather large....I am fairly certain there is a min of three in there....potentially a couple more than that though. Right now they are still in a position they were in early this morning which is pretty much three side by side on her front....I say a couple potential more because there is fluttering up by her ribs by her spine. Again, I am new....don't really have anything to compare to. I do see and feel three lumps for sure. So, she could go all night being calm but in the box? Yeesh...I'm gonna be nervous and feeling for movement often, lol. Oh, my oldest came in here to talk with her and went to rub her belly....she growled at her. She never does that! |

The info I gave you above was only to educate you and keep you informed that sometimes some bitches won't progress to 2nd stage labor, so be vigilant.......there is more to this whelping than meets the eye. I know, I know.....too much information. |
I have never had one growl at me but mine will definitely growl at other dogs when they are in the early stages of labor. Once I see mine trying to get away from the other dogs I know it is time for us to move to the bedroom where it is quiet. I will just kick back and watch tv with one eye on the momma. The nerve racking part comes when the hard contractions start. I try to not bother the momma to much then because they need to concentrate. I will just reach down occasionally when the momma is having a hard contraction and feel for the puppy bulge. Once I feel the pup bulging I watch mom very closely. Sometimes the pup will bulge during a contraction but when the contractions stop the pup will go back in. With each set of contractions the pup should come out a little more. Eventually when enough of the pup has presented itself she will push it on out. It can get very stressful when a pup is stuck half in and half out. Also, don't be surprised if mom lets out a big yelp when the pup pops out. |
Let me add to Barb's bulging scenario....when you see a bulge under the tail.....pup is just about due to be whelped.....it's in the canal and ready to enter the world. |
Also, I need to add to what Mary posted is that sometimes the first bulge is a water sack and not a pup. It can get very perplexing to first time whelpers. Sometimes the water sack can appear an hour or so before the pup appears. |

I know in the beginning when I saw the sack and was unsure....I'd gently push on the outer edge to see if I felt any resistance, or just felt like a water ballon. |
Marc, my very first litter, my little girl went about 12 hours just laying in her whelping box (or trying to hide under my bed). If you have a good relationship with your vet, you may want to call and give them a head's up with what's happening, just in case you have to contact them in the middle of the night, it's nice if they have a little warning. However, if your little girl looks like she is not stressed, go with your gut, she is probably just having a long labor as it is her first litter. Be glad she is giving YOU some warning, I have had one give no warning at all, just squat and push out a pup in the middle of my kitchen floor, no warning at all. |
This water sack....it contains no pup.....what's it purpose then? She sauntered out just now so I fed her and took her down the street for a short walk. She pooped then all the way home continued to try and poo when she was done already and not constipated based on her first bm. We got home....she ruffled up my blankets then went into her box. |
