Bleeding and breeding My girl is in the stage of bleeding. It has not changed to pinkish discharge yet. I was wondering what the best day to pick up the male would be. I have spoken to the owner of the male I will be using and she figures to wait a few days yet. How long do they bleed before they are ready to accept a male? This would be my first time breeding her so I am looking into all information...thanks so much. |
It's best to count from the day her heat started rather than trying to guess based on the appearance of blood. I am a big proponent of progesterone testing if you are unsure which days would be best. |
So I have the male stud here for a few days.....the male has grinded her numerous times though they have not tied. The first few attempts my girl was not upset but after awhile she didn't want him to mount her only lick her. I have read varying opinions about tieing....some say they can get prego without a tie and some say they cannot. What's the deal with that? I should also mention that I had to hold my girl in place in order for her to allow the mount. Will all the days be like that or will she eventually let him do it? |
It all depends on the amount days she's been bleeding. Usually most females will accept a male once their tails start flagging (they will put their tails to the side and put their rears in the males face). Most breeders don't put the pair together till the 9th day of bleeding, and then they pair them every other day for a total of 3 ties, 3 different days. Its possible your girl is not ready yet. |
You should ALWAYS hold your female--never just let them go at it without having a hand on them. One jerk from your girl to try to get away from him if and when they do tie and both of them could be seriously injured as a result. Also, not a good idea to just give them unlimited access to one another. |
Count from the first day of color (bloody show), on the average your girl will be ready to breed on the 10th and 12th day. Very easy to tell, by touch....if she feels soft, she's most likely ready to receive the male. Question? why are you bringing the male to your house. It is customary for the female to go to the stud's home....very few studs will perform in a strange environment. Your girl should have gone to the home of the stud owner and bred there..... Remember the day the breed is not necessarily the day she concieves..... |
I can't say for sure which day she started bleeding because we didn't notice she was in heat....little turd, lol. Her blood turned less and more pinkish today. The male came to our house cause the male doesn't perform as well at home. I am holding her while he is mounting her. The male will be here as long as I like.....I'm just wondering how long it could take for a tie? He has humped her NUMEROUS times today but not hooked yet. As a few days pass do you think she may allow him to do more? Right now she is fine with him smelling and licking but when he mounts she growls. He is doing his best tho. |
I'm gonna be devils advocate here but why are you breeding her if you do not know the answers to these breeding questions before hand? One should always know the breeding process before attempting to breed for the first time...but again JMHO Donna |

This is my first time through the breeding process. I did do my homework and have "reading" knowledge of the stages of heat.....I do, however, lack in knowledge when it is before me as I am new to it. Where I am from you would typically drop the girl off yes....but this male (who is vet recomended) does perform better outside of his home and if the female is in her own home she is less stressed. I have not come across the idea of having two people involved in the actual breeding time. That is news to me. I am aware that holding her and keeping them calm (especialy during a tie) is the best way. Right now I am leaning towards her being a day or two away from accepting him though he is showing all signs that she is ready. In my research I am aware that she should "soften" which will allow him proper access. Again, I am new so what exactly it should feel like is new to me. This is a learning process. |

Like I said before it is the stud's owner to conduct the breeding, if nothing else they should be at your house when you breed her. That is part of the fee you are paying them for. If you want a safe breeding it is best to have two people involved in the breeding, especially since you are inexperienced. I have my own studs, and have been doing this for awhile, but to ensure that a safe breeding takes place, both my husband and I are involved. He assists the male and I hold the girl. |
Just got back from the vet and the blood tests results show that it is too early....will re-unite them on tuesday night or wednesday for a few days. I'll let you know what happens! |
Update: Picked up the male yesterday and they had numerous encounters but did not tie. My little girl was flagging and so ready :) This morning they tied. I am keeping the male for another day or two so hopefully they tie once more :) Now it's time to dig up all my pregnacy and delivery notes....got lots of studying to do :) |
Question: They early this morning and since then my girl doesnt seem to interested in him....is that normal? Must they tie more than once? |
If she done it this morning she don't want it again right now. lol You don't want them to breed twice in oneday. Seperate them.. |
OK, thanks so much. My "mentor" said they could do it a few times a day but I am not seeing that they are interested in that.... I will try again in the morning.....but if they tied wouldn't she probably have the deal sealed? Lol. This male is known for impregnating without tying and yesterday they had relations ALL afternoon long, lol. |
It just according when she drops her eggs if onetime will do it. I just had one that breed several times on different days and it didn't take. I have been told a male needs time to build his sperm back up. Several times in oneday more than likely he is shooting blanks.. well that is the only way I know to put it. |

Yeah. They tied this morning so what I will do is give them one go on saturday and one go on sunday. My girl seems to only give him a half hour window first thing in the morning so to be safe I will do each morning and then bring the male home. I have the option of AI but since they tied already I don't think I will do that. |
Well, I've now had two successful ties :) It's like for those two it's first thing in the morning and that is it lol. Guess it's a waiting game now.....see if it worked! |
Question: If we assume that she is pregnant....should I add anything to her diet from the start? Or wait till we have confirmation? |
I would treat her as if she is pregnant and put her on a good puppy food. It won't hurt her if she isn't, but it's best to assume that she is. |
I keep all my breeding dogs, male and female, on puppy food all the time. i free fed meaning I leave it down all the time. About the last three weeks or so of the pregnancy, I start adding a couple of wet puppy food meals per day then after whelping they get about four extra meals a day with calcuim in them until the puppies start eating some, then I back mama's food off until she is just on her regular meals again by the time the babies are weaned. |
Ok. My dog is on an all stages Merrick dog food....good quality. Should I keep her on that one or change her to puppy from the same brand? I also free feed. She has access to it all the time. |
im having similar problems and need help fast ok here goes...i noticed my girl start to get swollen down there about 8 to 10 days ago my male dog has been licking and humping her constantly i have noticed in the past two days she has been letting him mount her and has been moving her tail up and sometimes to the side but after a few seconds of mounting my male gets tired i guess and stops the breeder that has been mentoring me does not live in my area but is in constant communication with me told me that i might have to assist them by having someone hold my female and kind of help my male with helping him get his mark ok i have tried this last night and this morning but when i do my female again stands there without a fight with her tail to the side and my male even with the help of his PACKAGE the target will not start to hump or anything im at my wits end because not moments after i release them i see him trying to hump her again im worried my time is running out thinking about taking the whole gang to the vet today please send me any advice that you think can help thanks |

NY teacups According to 1 of your posts in June your female was only 8 months old. Putting her at only 11 months now. If that information was correct she is to young to breed. Wait till the next heat at the earliest. |
this is another female that was given to me by my breeder that is mentoring me and is will be two years old on dec 24 |
nyteacups....I am not expert but when I put them together he took NUMEROUS attempts before they stuck...I mean like half an hour or more later did it finally work. Is your male way bigger or smaller than the female? I also paid the vet to do bloodwork and tell me her good days.....with that I had the option of AI if they didn't tie. They did tie two times on two different days so I didn't need the AI. What if you leave them alone in a room with more privacy for a long time? You think that would help or he just isn't into it at all? Also, you noticed the swelling but is she done the bleeding part? Is she onto the next phase? |
thanks so much for your response well they have been at it for about three days now but just yesterday is when shes really letting him go at it but after a few seconds he stops i have them in a baby gated section of my house and i have a clear view of them through the doorway like i said ive even held her and she moves her tail to the side and he licks for a while but no humping then i let them go and he runs behind her and humps her again help.... |
