| Need breeder opinions...heat cycle after pregnancy Victoria went into heat in January and had pups in March. I thought the cycle started over and she would be due for the next cycle the end of September, beginning of October. After reading posts on YT I see I was wrong. I never saw blood or any signs, and my male never showed any interest, and believe me he is my radar. But now she is acting like she did when she first got pregnant. She sucks her pillow and kneads it like a kitten, and humps it. She is overly affectionate and she has gained weight. Pre-pregnancy weight was 5 1/4 pounds, and after the puppies it was 5 3/4 pounds. Now it is 6! Appetite is the same, and I don't notice a difference in the nipples. Could she have gone into heat without my noticing and be pregnant? My male is AKC, but I didn't want to breed him to her as his quality is not as good and he is 6 1/2 pounds. I am hoping this is just hormones and she hasn't started her cycle yet. |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | From what I understand and have been told, a dogs' heat cycle is every 6 months (or what ever your females regular cycle is) regardless if they've been PG or not. So.......heat in January means heat again in 6 months = July. If she did go into heat in July, and if you're sure they did not tie, then maybe she is experiencing a false pregnancy???? If you're unsure, you could take her in to be examined or have an ultrasound done to confirm whether she is or not.

| Rose is correct. Their heat cycles stay the same regardless of wether they've had a litter or not. She may have had a "silent heat". You wouldn't have noticed any signs. And it's possible that your male did get to her if you were away from them and it could go unnoticed. Or, it could also be a false pregnancy. Either way, you'll need to have a vet confirm it. I'm sure you realize this, but if you aren't planning on breeding your male, get him neutered asap!

| Most of my females do not come in every 6 months. I would say the majority of my come in every 7 to 8 months. If your girl is humping her pillow she may bet getting ready to come in heat. Their moods do change right before a heat cycle. Hopefully that is the case and you did not miss her heat cycle. It is pretty hard to miss when they are in heat, at least around here it is. My boys let me know right away. |

| He was a gift I was given after 30 years of waiting. I was hoping to breed him, but when I was ready to breed, a breeder looked at him and told me he was not a good representative of the standard. It broke my heart, but I have been researching everything I can and I have to agree. But he is still my baby and I adore him. I have since added two girls to my family(half sisters three years apart), and the older one had a puppy last year in July and went into heat this past January. I assumed, since that was six months after her litter that the cycle changed with pregnancy. So I wasn't expecting Vicky to cycle 4 months after her puppies. So the other one must be on an 8 month cycle. Thank you for your help. I have been reading all of your posts for months and have never posted anything. I appreciate all of the info. |
