| Problems after whelping? I'm not sure if this is normal or not, so I thought I'd ask. Roxie seems to have a slight fever. I can feel the heat radiating through her fur and she just feels plain hot. Is it normal for a dog's temp to be raised for a couple of days after whelping? When I took her to the vet on the 19th right after she whelped, she checked out fine. Also, she's whining a LOT if I am not constantly petting her. As in, every minute of the day, she has to be in my lap with my hand stroking her, or she has to be in my arms at all times if I'm walking around my house. Maybe this might just be because she gave birth and has no puppies to show for it so her hormones are wacky..? She's extremely attached to me now. And lastly, she has never panted.. not during labor, whelping, or post-whelping, but she has been shivering constantly. Any ideas? I googled a ton of info but she doesn't have any symptoms of uterine infection or anything else. Her appetite is excellent, no limb stiffness, she's energetic, no abnormal discharge etc.. Sorry if I sound crazy! I'm just very concerned and/or paranoid. I was so upset about her dead little boy and I will literally die if something happens to Roxie. (I do plan on calling the vet in the morning anyway.. but just thought I'd mention it here first)

| You need to bring her to the vet to see if she has an infection . . .she shouldn't be running a fever . . .please call your vet and get her in there asap!

Panting post whelp and feeling warm after whelping is normal....if you've had children, think about it, hormones are out of wack...you are warmer and feeling out of sorts. Good thing you're taking her to the vets.

| Just went back and read your earlier post about Roxie's delivery. It wasn't a c-section. Sorry she's having problems and it doesn't sound like a normal delivery. Every singleton delivery my girls have had have been very hard, but there was no yelping until the puppy was coming out. If her pup had a leg or some other part in the canal she may have yelped and then sucked it back up. Maybe once she was fully dilated and enough of the pup was out with a strong contraction things popped fast. There are so many things that may have been the reason Roxie's little guy didn't breath. They say timing is everything and one of the things that comes to mind is how the heart functions. Electrical impulses stimulate the beat. If a strong pressure from outside happens at just the wrong time, the heart won't continue to beat. A little boy playing baseball gets hit in the chest with the ball at just this electrical beat moment and dies moments later.(true story) It could have been something like this since you felt him move just before birth. I am sorry if I am being too analytical but I really do try and figure out what whet wrong so I can try and have it not happen again. The fact of the matter is there really are so many things that can go wrong that if you continue to breed, you will experience this same sadness again. My heart goes out to you both as I'm sure most of the breeders on here bring to the surface the emotional sense of loss when we experienced it and through this site send you an understanding, supportive hug. |

| Thank you so much for your responses! Good news, I think Roxie is going to be ok Roxie's temp was normal this morning and she is no longer shivering. I didn't take her in to the vet but I did call and talk to him for a bit. He thinks the heat could have been her milk coming in and the resulting engorgement. Now that I think of it, I remember having that same radiating heat after having my children.. engorgement really isn't a pleasant thing! Her teats are very full and hard, poor thing. She seems a lot happier now that these biewer boys are around, too.. less need to be around me for every second of the day! I will continue to keep a watchful eye on her. Vwitscher, I am sorry about your girl's c section complications. That is just horrible! I was so close to taking Roxie in for a c-sec and now I wish I had. Who knows though, maybe that could have turned out disastrous as well, so I'm trying not to bear myself up about it. I won't ever be having another litter from Roxie. If I ever do have another litter in the future (doubtful because the other dogs are boys and won't be whelping, lol) I'll be a nervous wreck the entire time. So no, I just don't think breeding is for me! Thank you Rose! Roxie seems to be herself this morning. I think I'm "projecting" human emotions, onto her. I keep thinking she is so sad, like I would be if I had a stillborn. When in reality she never even got a chance to realize her role as a mommy. I don't even know if she knows she's supposed to have a puppy right now. The whole situation is sad but she is getting over it a lot quicker than I am!

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | I am so glad to hear that Roxie is feeling better, Elyse. And what do you know, my theory was kind of right about her mammary engorgement. I must be learning something correctly. And congrats to you on your Biewer boy; I just posted on your other thread. Does he have a name yet? These little dogs (yorkies & biewers) are addictive, aren't they?
