| Just a quick question... My girl is coming into her second heat cycle and she is throwing up all the time and refusing meals but drinking like normal... She did this on her first as well. Is this unusual? Or am I just being a little paranoid. Thanks for any responses. Trevor |

| In heat My Pollyanna is just starting her third cycle, and she is not happy. They will not spay her because of a possible liver shunt. She is eating very little, acts depressed and sleepy, is bleeding a lot, and wants to be close to me. The reason they found out about her liver was because I took her to be spayed because her last cycle was unpleasant. She acted like she was uncomfortable or in pain. So, I guess doggies are like people, they have individual problems when in heat and are not particularly comfortable. Maybe a little extra consideration and snuggles make the time easier. I'll tell you, my doggie was very comforted by putting doggie panties on her. Before, she was licking constantly and preoccupied with the mess. Now, she is sleeping like a baby and not paying any attention to it. |

| Thank you for the boost... I snuggled a lot with during her first cycle and had no problems whatsoever... this time I am not so lucky! Twice in one day I wa thrown up on. She wants to snuggle and have her belly rubbed and what not but as soon as she rolls over she projectile vomits all over herself and some- thing or person. I had taken her to the vet after last time because her vulva stayed swollen and she was constipated. All I could think was that she had pyometria. Took her in and the vet cleared her with no problems... So, maybe she just has a sensitive tummy during her cycle. Which sucks cause it goes on for about a month! LOL |

I don't think she has pyometria. That is unless she is depressed and has an odorous vaginal discharge, which may be brown and thick. The "classic" signs of pyometra are increased water intake and urination, dpression and lethargy. Fever may be present, especially in advanced cases. Sometimes a vaginal discharge is present, some times not. Anytime a bitch is "off" ofter being in season, watch for these signs. The time varies, but observe roughly at two to three weeks. It usually occurrs in older bitches but, can occur in younger ones. It can be very sneaky; the animal may become critical before the owner recognizes it is ill. Once diagnosed, it must be treated at once. Spaying is the best option. Waiting to treat with antibiotics can result in a ruptured uterus and a fatality.

| Rhianna just finished her 2nd heat cycle (4 months to the day of her 1st cycle, which I thought was different than the norm)and on the first night she started, she did throw up . . .and her appetite was not there for the next day . . I'm not sure if it had something to do with her start of her cycle, or if she just generally didn't feel well or ate something that didn't agree with her. . .it was very coincidental though . . .and after that, she was her normal self . . .but I won't know until her 3rd cycle if it was related to her start of heat . . .which by my calculation will be October 12th if she stays on this 4 month thing . . .

| First day of blood . . .it just seemed so weird that her first one was February 12th and her second one came right on June 12th. I noticed the week before she started that PMS thing with Brody . .. everytime she was sleeping and if he happened to walk by she'd flip out and jump out of her bed growling and then wagging her tail . . .at first I was thinking no way is she PMSing because I assumed her 2nd heat would start in August sometime. But, then she started to bleed, then swell (not as much as her first heat though) then it was time for Brody's confinement . . .I contacted my vet because I was concerned that it wasn't an actual heat cycle but pyometra . . .he had me bring her in and he confirmed that yes, she actually was in heat . . .and said that some dogs will go into heat three times a year . . .but he was unsure if this would be the norm for her and we are watching and waiting to see if in fact her 3rd heat would be in October or not. The only difference between her 1st and 2nd heat was the swelling . . her first heat she swelled up so much, it almost looked like a large strawberry . . .the 2nd heat she did swell, but it wasn't that huge pronounced swelling . . .but I am assuming that is because before she went into her first heat, her vulva was still a little bitty thing . . .

One week of coming in. Pink and swelling. This is the first day of her cycle. One week in. Showing Color (you count from the first day of this if you plan to breed) One week going out. The time you breed. Usually on the 10th & 12th day from her first day of showing color. You'll notice that the vulva will soften, ready to accept the male.

| Wow, so I'm a week off on my dates . . .I must of misunderstood what I have read . . .I know its a week coming in, a week in, and a week going out, I just always thought it was when there was blood . . .so, in all reality, when she is PMSing is when she is actually coming in . . . See, this is why, I like to absorb information . . . Thank you!
