I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Anyone know Huddersfield Ben birthdate? I've been doing a little reading on the history of the Yorkshire terrier, and there is one dog by the name of Hudderfield Ben who is said to be the father of the Yorkshire Terrier. While the breed didn't originate in Yorkshire, England, Ben, who lived there, is said to have been an excellent ratting dog, and although he was 9-12 pounds regularly sired stock that was able to compete in the under the 7 pound limit. I thought it would be fun to celebrate his birthday, but all I can find is his day of death, September 23. Since so many of you have access to better books, I was hoping someone might have access to this information. Also, does anyone think there will be lots of arguments if I repeat the claim that he is indeed the "father" of the Yorkshire Terrier? I got my information from Wikepedia, although I've read other sources that say the same thing. Huddersfield Ben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

| Back in 1865 – the year of Huddersfield Ben's birth – dogs were bred to exhibit useful qualities, not for their looks. There also was not much interest in keeping breeds pure. There are very few accurate records of dog breeding at this time. It is also thought that dog breeding was considered such a secret business that no records were kept for fear of the knowledge getting out to competitors. Yorkshire Terriers got their name because the breed was perfected in Yorkshire.

| Yep, it goes on to say that the breed was perfected in Yorkshire, hence the Yorkshire Terrier.

I also wasn't sure if people would be offended by celebration of the day of death, instead of the day of birth.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Ok, thanks since I probably won't find his birth month date, do you think celebrating his "life" on September 23 would be acceptable? I appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah that was one of my sources, but it still didn't mention birth month.

| Nancy, do you have the book 'The Book Of The Yorkshire Terrier' by Joan McDonald Brearley? If you don't, I highly recommend it. It was written in 1984 but it has some great information on the history of the Yorkshire Terrier. It has lots of pictures of many of the older yorkies. It is amazing to go back and see how much the breed has changed. You can usually find the book on Ebay or Amazon. |
