| dear breeders I have a question regarding puppies that turn out to have a congenital disease. Do most breeders insist the only thing they will do is give a new puppy upon the return of yours. I can't believe that they would expect the owner to give up a puppy that they have paid for surgery on, and have bonded with for 8 months. Is that why the warranty is worded that way? What would a breeder do with a 9 month old puppy that has had surgery for legg perths disease and has been nutered? I guess the breeder can be positive that he will never get a puppy back. I don't know of anyone who would give up a dog they had had for 8 or 9 months and spent thousands of dollars on in order to get the benifit of the warranty. I know all breeders are not the same but I see warranties written up this way more times than not. I guess it assures the breeders that use this type of contract that they will never have to suffer from breeding a puppy with defects. Last edited by jacquelinebabco; 05-15-2009 at 10:29 AM. |

I think most people are honest about the puppy they bought but there are some people that try to scam the breeder out of a refund and also a puppy by claiming all these things are wrong with a puppy, yet when asked over and over, they refuse to submit to the breeder vet records or anything for proof. i have known of several times this has happened and then because the breeder wouldn't cave, their reputation has been ruined all over the internt. I feel breeders do have to protect themselves from these people but I also think breeders should be flexible and evaluate each case individually to see what to do to make the situation right. i think many of us that say the puppy "must" be returned feel this way. I would never want to take someone's baby but neither would I replace the puppy or give even a partial refund without proo f and that seems to be what a lot of buyers expect. They expect you to take their word. Sorry but it doesn't work that way.. | |

| I agree also--- Sugar's Mom explained it well. My written guarantee says "return for refund" but I carefully explain to people that whether I would require someone to part with their puppy would depend on the circumstances and quality/credibility of the medical records presented to me. This is intended to protect the puppy first, then the client and breeder. |

| My Piper was diagnosed with Legg Perthes Disease at 7 months. She had been spayed in November and needed hip surgery in December. I notified my breeder, not that I would ever consider returning her, but I thought she should be aware of the situation. The breeder was very upset about Piper. She said that never happened to any of her babies but she said that she had bought Piper's mother to improve her breeding program and that was the first time she had bred her. The breeder did pay for half of Piper's surgery and notified the owners of the other litter mates. They were all fine. I was quite surprised that the breeder offered any financial help. I didn't expect anything. The breeder ended up having Piper's mom spayed and rehomed as a pet.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Piper's breeder did the right thing. My contract says I will assist up to the price of the dog for genetic ailments or will replace with a new puppy. Of course, as a breeder I will want my vet to talk to your vet. I do require written information from my buyer's vets and a necropsy if a puppy or a dog dies suddenly. And yes, buyers sometimes do try to scam the breeder. |

| thanks Thanks for all of your replies. I was not trying to scam anyone. I provided the breeder with all of the records from the vet including his phone and fax number. I sent a video of him the first post op day but I guess I dealt with the wrong breeder. I only can figure that this breeder is in it for the money and not for the love of Yorkie's. If I go to the AKC will they do anything regarding not allowing any further litters from these parents from being registered? Again, thanks so much for your input. My next yorkie will come from a breeder on YT. Last edited by jacquelinebabco; 05-16-2009 at 04:01 PM. |
