| ![]() That doesn't make a difference! small is small! If they are ex-small they stay here till I think they are big enough and the people are smart enough to raise them. |

| ![]() As a breeder. A pup should never leave their mothers until 12 weeks of age. However, if they haven't reached 2 pounds at 12 weeks, they should stay with mom and the breeder until they do. A minimum of 2 shots and vet check (x-rays on hips and knees, bile acid tests, etc) prior to leaving. Mothers do so much training from 8 to 12 weeks of age. Leaving their mothers is very risky, they are just being weaned and suspectible to hyperglycemia at that time. There is also what is known as the fear factor. Nothing, nothing should be changed in a pups routine at 8, 12, 16 or 24 weeks of age. A breeder should do everything to make sure that a puppy is healthy, well socialized and adjusted.

| ![]() I got our two Yorkies when they were 12 weeks old. I was told that is the best age to get them from their mommies, don't know if this is true or not. |

"All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and temperament development through interaction with siblings, dam and other dogs. " Here is the link: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America is the Parent club of our breed. It is the club that sets the standard and tells the AKC what we are expecting of our breed. It is a good source to use to back up your decision to keep your puppies until at least 12 weeks of age.

| ![]() A lot of breeders are now holding their puppies even longer so, that the puppies can be spayed/nuetered prior to leaving the breeders homes. There is so much a good breeder does prior to the puppies leaving their homes.

| ![]() Puppies that go home before 12 weeks haven't learned all they can from there mom and the breeder is not doing what is best for the pups. Puppy's that come home before 8 weeks can have problems eating, potty training issues, socialization issues and biting issues. Any breeder who really cares for the pups will keep them until at least 12 weeks.

YT Addict | ![]() i read somewhere that puppies do not understand potty training until they are 12 weeks old so i would not allow them to go until 13+ weeks

| ![]() What happened to so many of our longtime, respected breeders here on YT? There are so few left and they hardly ever post anymore. I read somewhere there was one battle too many and they got tired of being attacked for their opinions, etc. Wonder if that is really the problem? I agree with Mardelin's Post #18 on this subject - at 12 weeks minimum to help the puppy get its best start in life. And that last month is when so much imprinting is said to go on when you read all the "experts" books on canine brain and learning development. Between myself and my son, we probably have 70 books on dog development and training and mine are mostly audio as I can't read that well anymore. That way when they do make that big step and go to a new home, they are better able to cope with the stress of separation from their pack and all the newness, strangeness of their new home.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | ![]() I'm still here. And I agree where I posted earlier, and said 12 weeks. I don't know why the other breeders don't post often, I don't because I'm busy and need to prioritize where my spare time goes. |

| ![]() There are so few left! Maybe everybody just got busier but I worry so many just got run off. I used to read their posts about how tired they get of being called "attackers" or "judges", etc.
