| Day 57 delivery - only 1 alive...help! Today is day 57 and Tinkerbell delivered 2 puppies before I got home today and they were not living. (I had come home during lunch to check on her and she ate some chicken for me and seemed okay) One more was born right after I got home and it was extremely small - then about 15 minutes later she delivered 1 more - it looked lifeless but I rubbed it with a towel and did the sling thing several times, rubbed some more and it gasped and started wiggling!! I put her next to Tinkerbell and she started licking her persistantly... It has been about 1 1/2 hours and with assistance, she has been able to latch on to one of Tinkerbell's smaller teats. I am glued to the floor.. sitting by the playpen and staring at them...Tinkerbell seems perfectly content Has anyone had a premature puppy on day 57 that lived? I have a heating pad on low under a couple layers of bedding, I have a large towel draped over half of the playpen to prevent drafts and I am watching CLOSELY. Any suggestions for the night?? Please keep Tinkerbell and this tiny baby girl in your prayers!

| Does the puppy have hair? If the puppy is too premature it will not have hair and the skin will feel rubbery. Is the puppy breathing well on it's own? Premature puppies usually struggle to breath. How much does the puppy weigh? I am sorry for you loss and I pray the little surviving puppy will be okay. Do you think mom is through having puppies? |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Oh my gosh...........I am so sorry for the loss of the 3(?) puppies and I will pray very hard for the surviving little one. Sounds like you are doing things right....keeping it warm and being sure it is latching on and eating. Others more knowledgable might be able to help you more with a bit more information. I hope that you also maybe called your vet for help also. Good luck to you; please keep us posted.

| Breathing okay Yes, the puppy has some hair, is breathing okay on its own - I tried to weigh her but I only have a food scale (not digital) and it doesn't really register she is so tiny. She does squeak - I haven't been able to get her to latch on the past 45 minutes. I have a syringe and express a little milk from mommy and tried putting in the babies mouth just to get some calories and nutrients. I will keep trying.....I did speak to my vet earlier and she pretty much said keep doing what I'm doing.....but it seems like I should being doing more!!! I am going to try and get her to nurse again.....thanks for caring!!

| While you're beside them, I'd lay a light blanket over the puppy to try to keep her warm as she nurses also. Be sure to keep her warm. |

| I do not consider myself an expert; but my little NaTasha had some difficulties with her delivery 10 days ago. We have one little baby girl that made it. Mom had to be on IV fluids at the vets for a couple of days and we fed the baby Esbilac through an eye dropper. She is thriving and seems to have learned how to nurse on Mom, but we are continuing to supplement for now. This is the first time I have had success with a newborn w/o Mom. But feeding every 2 1/2 hours, keeping her warm and making sure she was going potty seems to have been what she needed. The best of luck with your little one. I know how heart breaking it is when you lose even one baby. Last edited by sandybobb; 03-18-2009 at 06:52 PM. Reason: clarification |

| Praying for your babies and YOU! I have no words of wisdom regarding how to help your babies - but please know that your willingness to share your story brings each of us to our knees, realizing how much we love these furry little critters! We are so Blessed to have them in our lives... and I continue to be amazed at the miracle of birth and healthy babies! I don't think I have ever taken my beautiful little Molly for granted...but your story reminded me of watching my baby being born. Your love and support will help Tinkerbell and her baby more than anything else!! Hang in there!

| What is esbilac? Where do you get it? Is there any other suggestions to use for a supplement till she gets stronger and Tinkerbells milk starts flowing better?? How often should I try and supplement her? Should I use a syringe or try and find a small dropper?

| Nutri-cal is not for newborns. Nutri-drops are. Please read this article for ideas: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm I recently had a litter of 8 where two of the pups were really tiny and I made the glucose solution mention in the above article and I started giving them that along with some puppy formula, plus they were nursing on their momma and they did real well. You have to make sure the puppy is warm. Never try to feel a cold puppy. There is nothing like mothers milk so if you can express her milk that that would be good. The first few hours the mother produce colostrum with is important for the puppy to get. Continue to try to get her to nurse. A little karo syrup on mommas nipple might help. I pray your little one makes it. |
