No, do not use nutrical, but you could use a drop of nutri-drops if you have them.

You may need to suppliment the baby. You can by milk replacer at any pet store...Petsmart, petco, Pet Supplies Plus, if she isn't nursing on mom, I'd be sure to make sure she is getting a suppliment.

You may need to use a syringe depending on how small she is. I have used a premie nipple in the past.

Thanks, I printed the article and I will read it right away. I'm happy to report the little girl has been latched on for about 5 minutes now....her mouth is so little though - I sure hope she is getting something for all her efforts! Also, it seems Tinkerbell has more milk now.....it's going to be a LONG night!

Okay, should this little baby be sleeping most of the time.....whenever she is holding still I get worried about her and try to get her to latch on to Tinkerbell again...or I move her a little to make sure she wiggles. I don't know if I'm obsessing (?sp) to much and bothering the baby .... any comments? She is about 6 hours old now....
I cut down a box so the sides would be only about 6 inches high, put the heating pad in the bottom, a thick pad, then a blanket on top - it seems to be the right size for Tinker and her little angel and they are next to me on the bed.

Bending over her in the playpen was killing my back - so this is better I think.

The little baby girl has made it through her first night!

Does anyone have any experience with sub Q dextrose for tiny, premature puppies? I'm going to call the vet and ask her about that, also I will go to the pet store and get some nutri-drops as suggested. Since she's latching on (with assistance) she must getting some of Tinkerbells milk to have made it this far, right? I'm worried about her hydration.......(one of many worries)

You can see her tiny, itty bitty ribs! She is not fussy but does bob her head alot when trying to get a hold of Tinkerbell's big teats. She seems content when she does get latched on......I try to direct her to the smaller ones - but she has a mind of her own and a determined one at that!

I used to have dextrose for my goats when they went into labor but I never used it. I would discuss that with a vet before you use it if your not sure about it. (I cannot remember much about it) It sounds like your are paying close attention to this little ones needs, and that may make all the difference, she sure sounds tiny from what you describe. Newborns do not do much more than eat and sleep & mom keeps them clean in the potty department. So I'd say if the baby is content & quiet when not nursing, her belly is probably full. Puppies cry when they are hungry or cold, or obviously if something is wrong. But if she is a tiny one, supplementing is not out of the question........how much or often would be better answered by someone with more experiance with it. Hopefully, since she's the only pup, she will get plenty from mom and gain weight & strength very soon.
Do you know her weight yet. Being that small it is very important to keep track. We don't want her to lose weight..........every ounce matters when they are tiny! Continued wishes for good luck & prayers coming your way!

I am so glad she made it through the night. At this age all she will do is eat and sleep. As long as she is nursing strongly she should not need anything else. To tell if she is nursing strong you should feel a little resistance when you pull her a nipple. Weak puppies of puppies with cleft puppies will go through the motions of nursing but are not strong enough to get milk out.

How is momma doing? You need to keep a close eye on her breast that they do not get hard and red. If this happens she might need antibiotics. Also, be sure to monitors the mommas temperature for the next few days. Make sure momma gets plenty of food.

I pray your little girl continues to do well.

I have had pups with not much hair on them 7 days early.
Only one made it ,tube fed then transfered to a bottle after a month.
benebac and pet drops are a must for little ones .
All my new babies get benebac and pet drops
Glad to hear she made it through the night.

I would talk to your vet about sub Q , it isnt needed if she is not dehydrated.
Pedialite works good if you can get it to them in a bottle? 1 cc to 1 1/2 cc for a 2 oz pup
Sub Q works immediatly though if she needs it.
pet drops can get that slow un perky pup get going

Tinkerbell and the little angel are still doing well. We took them to a vet today (not our regular one that I spoke with on Wednesday night--that was essentially no help!) The little girl weighs 52 grams......and the vet gave her a 50/50 chance of surviving - that was after we showed him how she could latch on to Tink's teat. Prior to that - he admitted he was only thinking aboua a 20% chance of survival.
He feels as long as Tinkerbell has milk (which she has a lot of now) - to continue like we have been - encouraging her to nurse. We did get a little bottle and first born formula in case we have to supplement we have it on hand and ready. He said we have been doing everything right (relief). Everyone was amazed at how tiny the little girl is - how does that weight sound? Has anyone had a pup that size that survived?? If not, then be ready for a first

This little girl is a miracle baby.....keep sending up prayers for mom and baby thumbup:

I did the conversion and 52 grams is 1.83424 ozs. That is really tiny. I do pray she makes it. Is she latching on by herself or do you still have to help her?

WOW!!!! I thought my little 2.1 oz baby was small. She is now 12 days old and I'm supplementing every 2 1/2 hours. She still isn't growing.

I will be praying and watching to see how your little one grows.

I am sending hugs to you and many prayers that your miracle baby is just that, and grows up big and strong. I can't imagine not having to supplement a tiny one like that, but I really have no experiance with one so small.
