| Nutri-cal, cal-sorb, and nurti-drops... Hi there, I have ordered several things to supplement with through my whelping and I just wanted to clarify their uses before I talk to my vet. about them.... I have ordered Nurti-cal, cal-sorb, nurti-cal-puppy, and nurti-drops. I have also heard about Bene-bac but didn't order that. As far as I know Nutri-cal is a high calorie nutrient supplement, which helps when females aren't eating well, or are not feeling well to supplement their diet? (maybe 2X a day?) (diahrea?) And Cal-sorb is to boost calcium levels in bitches who are in active labor (for contraction strength) and for nursing? ( I am not sure how often use this product...) Nutri-cal puppy would be for pups when they are not feeling well or gaining weight? (not sure how often) And nutri-drops is a fast acting supplement for both mom and pups to help increase activity and energy? That is my best guess on these products and I would imagine that the nutri-drops could be substituted for the nutri-cal puppy? And whelping pudding is for after delivery to...? If anyone knows of different uses or knows that I have a wrong understanding of their uses I would like to hear about it. I am going to print this thread off and put it in my whelping info folder to use later on. Thanks. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I keep Calsorb on hand just in case my bitches contractions get weak, and then only would I use it. I always keep nutrical on hand. I use it for everything LOL, but for whelping I give mom and a little here and there through out the whole birhting to give her energy. Nutri drops I use on the pups after I finsih cleaning them and they are all clear. I normally give them one tiny drop on the roof of their mouth, just to get them going. Whelping pudding I also make and give to mom while birthing AND for a couple weeks after while nursing. Hope this helps! |

| I purchased Happy Jack Milkade for milk production and calcium. Would you ust this the same way as the calsorb? The milkade suggest that you 1T. to the bitch 4-5 days before whelping. Will this upset her calcium levels? |

I also recommend and love Nursemate asap you can get it at revivalanimal. I add this to the goats milk for tinies to help suppliment them. I also give it to my newborns right away to give them a boost before mom starts nursing them. I have some bitches that dont nurse till they are done whelping and this helps the puppies alot initially imo. | |

| I usually use the Nutri-cal during the whelping process and it really helps the momma. The Cal-sorb is essential to have on hand in case the momma dog starts getting eclampsia. Nursing females are not likely to get eclampsia if they are eating 4 good meals a day but just skipping one meal could bring it on and the Cal-sorb could save her life. I don't like using Cal-sorb during whelping unless I feel it is absolutely necessary because it can cause the momma to start vomiting. |

| So if I had both the Nutri Drops and the Nursemate which is better to use or are there times when one is more appropriate than others? Also, I had read the tip about the boiled liver. If using the nursemate and/or the nutri Drops would I still use the Liver water? As far as the whelping pudding, that is NOT given until whelping, correct?

| Okay, I am going to give my honest opinion. I feel that many people are trying to do too much to these new born puppies. Nothing is better than just plain old momma's milk. I have never used the NurseMate so I am not sure the purpose of it is. I do not give Nutri-drops unless I feel it is really necessary. Then I would give only 1 drop. It is important to make sure the newborns attach to the momma, it is important the pups have a heating pad that maintains a temperature around 100 degrees, it is important that the momma can get off the heating pad and does not get too hot because if the momma gets too hot, that will greatly reduce her milk production. I have posted the following article before and in paragraph 10 it give a recipe for glucose water. This is what a recommend to give a newborn the first few days, only if the puppy seems weak or is not gaining. http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm I feel it is very important that the momma get plenty of food after the pups are born BUT I do not change up their diets after they have pups except for giving them more of the canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food which I add to their dry Canidae or Chicken Soup puppy food and they get 1/2 of a Doc Roy's Healthy Bone twice a day. I will also give the momma Nutri-cal a few times a day if she is not eating well. I always hand feed my mommas the first few days. Some mommas will loose their appetite after having pups, especially if they eat some of the afterbirth. I always offer my momma food right after they have had pups and most of the are ready to eat because they had not had a lot to eat prior to delivering. |
