| what do you use to identify the puppies If you dont' really have any distinguishing marks and there are many puppies then what do you use to identify them?? Does anyone have a link that you can purchase id bands? or something from? I know pet edge has some but their smallest are for 5-9" necks . I am looking for something for 2-3 oz babies. Thanks

| In 20 years of breeding I have never used anything around puppies necks but I know many do. I do know of 2 instances where puppies have been choked to death and this is the reason I never used anything. The largest litters I ever had was 5 and I was always able to tell mine apart. I also never had more than one litter at a time so I guess that helped as well |

| I haven't had to use them either, I had 2 my first litter, and then two singletons, so I haven't had any need for them, but I know Chattiesmom, had 9 puppies at one time, and she color coded them, you could pm her and ask her about it, she would be more than happy to help

| I ordered some from jefferspet.com from the whelping suppies section. I never could get them to stay on my babies or the mothers would tear them off so I stopped using them. They were color coded. I saw on here somewhere the other day where someone was using the ponytail bands in different colors. That seems like something I might want to try. But, I usually can tell mine apart anyway. I have only had one puppy out of several litters that didn't have an odd shaped white patch under it's neck. Like a very thin white line or a white zigzag. As they get older tho, that changes sshape and disappears. That is when I run into trouble. Then I start painting toenails. |

| I used yarn that was different colors. I always made sure that I could get my pinky finger under them. It worked really well. I always checked it when I would weigh my puppies and would change it if it needed it. |

| I have a very easy way of marking puppies to tell them apart. It's easy to apply and very safe for the puppies. When they are born each puppy gets marked in the order of their birth, I do this when I weigh them and check them over. Boys get marked on the left foot, girls on the right (it's easy to remember male and left each have only 4 letters). I use white fingernail polish so it's easy to see against the little black toenails. So, the first male born gets his first toenail on the left painted, the second male gets his second toenail on the left painted, the first girl gets her first toenail on the right painted, the second girl gets her second toenail painted and so on. You do have to reapply it every few days but it's really easy to do, especially if you are weighing them several times a day like I do. As the puppies get older and more mobile you may have to switch to their back feet instead of the front feet. The nail polish seems to last longer on their back feet. Anyway this has worked well for me in the past and there isn't anything around their necks to get tangled up or strangled on. Teresa Last edited by Teresamag; 02-17-2009 at 03:59 PM. |

| I had used polish and yarn but the polish always wore off too quickly and the yarn not very practical tiny legs would sometimes get caught up in there. I purchase my whelping bands from Whelping ID Bands - Ultra-Soft...Expandable Whelping ID Bands For Any Size Litter! they are a fleece material with tons of stretch to it,so you can put them on a little more snug and not worry about choking.

Another breeder told me about making bands out of the really light stretchy elastic. Make them different colors and different sizes so you can keep changing them as they grow. | |

| For my records, I used a small amount of permanent marker on the belly in different colors. You'd be surprised at how many different colored Sharpies there are. Another thought is to use pink for the girls and blue for the boys. Here are some ideas of different simple shapes to use - heart, star, circle, rectangle triangle. When people came to look at the pups I put different colored silk collars on them with quick release buckles. The collars came off the second the people left - I am paranoid about leaving anything around the neck. It seems like they "look" for ways to get tangled up. |
