Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Any tips or advice on csection My girl is 53 days. She had an xray and only has 1 huge pup. They are thinking about taking it on day 59. Is that to early? Our problem if I don't do it that day if she goes on 60,61 it will have to be an emergency csection. Any tips on a singleton and csections would be great. Thanks Melissa

| I'm not a breeder, but, my old vet said 62 days is norm, and anywhere from 5 days before to 5 days after. My friends dog just had a pup a week early, she's 3 weeks now and is doing fine. Thought maybe the mother wasn't going to make it, so she had to tube and bottle feed the baby because of the mother being so bad off. So, the vet knows what he's talking about, and I would feel comfortable with the 3 days before delivery. Better safe than sorry. |

| The problem is you really don't know when she conceived. She could have conceived days after she was bred. I would not take the puppy that early because you risk the chance the puppy will not be developed enough. I know of a lady that let her vet do a planned c-section and all the puppies died because they were too premature. How big is your female? Even if the puppy appears big it is still possible she could deliver it. I know one lady that was told her female was going to have a big puppies and the vet did a planned c-section and the puppies were small. Over the years I have had a number of singleton pups and only one required a c-section and she was a 5 lb female. I pray all goes well with your momma. Please keep us posted |

| I think it would be wise to not have a c-section that early. Has she had puppies before? How big is she? Unless she is really tiny I would just about bet she could deliver the puppy on her own. |

| My vet waits until they start labor....I've never had one of my girls have a c-section.... but during my Jasmine's first pregnancy they weren't sure if she could deliver... the pup's heads were about the same size as her "area". They were on standby when she went into labor. She had no problems delivering on her own.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | This is her first litter. She weighs 5 pounds right now. He told me their was no way the head could pass. Either we could do a planned csection or wait to have an emergency. I don't want to lose the my girl.

| I was worried about one of my girls that had pups recently. I talked to my vet and they did an xray and said she may have to have one, but he would NOT do a scheduled c-section for that very reason (they could be underdeveloped). He said the best thing to do is to wait until they go into labor on their own, and if they can't deliver the pups then they would do a section at that point. I don't think vets like to schedule them for fear that they will do it on the wrong day, etc. and why put the mom through that if she can indeed have them on her own? It's hard to tell on an xray if they will need one or not...sometimes a puppy's head can look bigger than it really is due to lighting, etc. At least that's what my vet says. I would honestly wait if it were me. My girl ended up having hers on her own without a section, even though I did have to pull on the shoulders of a couple to get them out. However, to me, that was much better than putting her through surgery for no reason. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | From what I have learned is that its best to let the labor start before doing a c section. It is possible she could still pass the pup. The xrays are hard to determine sometimes. Is your vet on call 24/7? Is there a way to make sure he is available? I've had a singleton baby and all it took was an oxi shot, but she was a smaller female too, and I retired her. I would worry of not knowing her exact ovulation date and taking the baby too early. Did you see the xray? Was the pup very large to the eye? |

He is on call but I am scared I won't get there in time. I am afraid of the pup getting stuck and losing them both. I want to wait but if I do what if I wait and lose them both. I am really torn here. I am praying that when I take her in on Thursday she will be starting in labor.

| Once labor starts you will have plenty of time. Even during a normal delivery they momma will have contractions for hours before the hard contractions start. The hard contractions usually last an hour or sometime a little longer depending on the size of the pup. Is it possible there are two puppies and it just appears like one on the x-ray? By next Thursday if the puppy has not dropped then I would definitely not have the c-section done. Usually the pup will drop a few days before delivery. Also, when the puppy gets close to full term their movement will be good and strong so if by next week you are not feeling really strong movement of the puppy I would wait. I do pray all goes well. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you all for the advice. He wants me to bring her in on Thursday to look at her again then decide. They put me on the books but it is not difante yet. Maybe the xray was wrong and it is not as bad as what he thinks. The two techs. in the office breed yorkies and have for 20 years so I trust them. one of them was not suppose to work on Thursday but she was coming in also.
