| It seems like two years ago that the change was made, hopefully someone else will know exactly. I believe it was the first time in over a hundred years the standard had been changed. Originally there were two size classes and they were combined into one. Again I'm going strictly from memory and as I get older it isn't what I claim it used to be.

| I did not think the standard for size had changed since 1966? I know that in 2007 they updated the standard regarding coloring.... Hopefully someone will clarify. ETA: I'm looking in YT for Dummies copyright 2002 and it shows the standard as being the same as it is currently... Last edited by BamaFan121s; 09-01-2008 at 02:54 PM. |

| I didnt think the standard for size had been changed either. I have always known it to be up to 7 lbs only, no minimum.

| The breed standard here in America was written in 1966, it was a revision of the English standard, and was accepted by AKC at that time. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America wasn't accepted as a member club by the AKC until 1958. The illustrated version was published in 1979 to help make it clearer. The only revision since than has been the dq for off colored yorkies.

| What surprises me is how many people call me looking for females that will be 3 pounds or under as adults. Do they even realize how small 3 pounds is?

| I get the same thing all the time!! I really dont think that the public is aware of how tiny 3 lbs is. I think they just go by what others say that their dogs weighs only and then want one just like it. I have seen many people with small Yorkies "fudge" on the size of their dog when telling people how much the dog weighs.

I understand the whole not breeding anything under 3 lbs. But what I am questioning is why are they magically sick if under 4 lbs? I do not understand? What is the difference between 3 lbs and 4 lbs besides 16 oz???? My Chloe weighs exactly 3 lbs! The only thing that she has had a problem with is hypo when she was younger. Nothing snce I got her a friend!!!

| I don't think that they are neccessarily 'sick' if they are under 4 lbs, but the smaller they are, the more prone to injury they are. I think alot of times, you have health issues with really small Yorkies because of the people breeding them with the intention of producing really small dogs--clearly, the best interest of the dog is not the primary focus, I would think the health of the dog would just follow suit. |

she only weighs 48 ounces.. that is almost half her body weight.. sounds dangerous.. 5 pounds minimum to breed only makes sense

The breeder I got her from told me she would be about 4-5lbs grown--either she lied or Chloe decided to not grow up!!!

| The standard only changed 2 years ago regarding color, but not size. That has been the same for quite some time now--it is and has been 'not to exceed 7 pounds.' No minimum weight. If you look up the standard on the YTCA website, it lists the changes that have been made and when. There have been no changes to size since 1966 listed.
