| LOL, that does happen from time to time. By all the normal indicators, our Kasey should have been around 5 pounds, but he only ever made it to 3 lbs, soaking wet. |

| I stand corrected on the point of the standard change. I should have looked it up before posting but I was in a hurry to go eat so I winged it. Please forgive me. I did look at the AKC website and found this in the Yorkshire Terrier description under Right Breed for You?: Toy Group; AKC recognized in 1885. Ranging in size from four to seven pounds. Companion, ratter. © The American Kennel Club, Inc. A little misleading eh? You may want to double check me on this given my accuracy rating for this thread>> American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier This may be adding to the mistaken belief that the standard is 4-7 lbs. It may have been a couple of years ago that I realized the standard and the AKC description said two different things. Hmmm...yeah, that's the ticket.

| Alot of the buying public are uneducated about size. Alot of Yorkie people I have met say that their dog weighs 3 lbs and when I pick them up, they are more like 6 lbs. Thats what I mean by fudging the truth. Then, when the buying public calls, they too want a 3 lb dog never realizing that they were actually looking at a 6 pounder. I love tinies too!! But not for breeding. Most of my "larger" dogs almost always will throw a tiny girl, under 4 lbs adult weight. I think that the tinies are sooooo darned cute and fearless!! They dont even look real sometimes!!

And fearless she is. I have to watch her when it comes time to be around "real dogs" (I say that because she doesnt look real) !!! We live in a small farming community...and from time to time we see a rat....Some of them have been bigger than HER!!! I would NEVER think about breeding her....she is SOOOOOOOOOOOO tiny!!! I could not bear to loosing her!!! | |

| Have you seen a "rat" in NY or London? I wouldn't want to put my little 6 lb girl, Butterfly, up against one! When they were really "ratters", they were more in the 15 to 25 lb range. But breeding them smaller and smaller seems to be what people are trying to do. It really sets me off when I get someone wanting to buy one of my little girls that are only going to be 3 to 4 lbs as a breeder! NO NO NO. My mom dogs are at least 6 lbs or I have them spayed and let them to to pet only families. Two different times, with two different females, I tried to breed 5 lb Yorkies only to have early c-sections with the loss of the puppies because the mom had too many puppies in her and couldn't carry to term. Not any more! If I want the smaller size, my little 3 to 4 lb males will have to take care of that part. I want my mom's to deliver naturally and easily. |

Went a little further in that same link : American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier History It doesn't say it's a differnt breed, but they were seperated into two classes in shows to over 5 lbs, and under 5 lbs... though settled down for an average of 3-7 lbs... which is the 3rd description?? under 7 lbs, 4-7 lbs, and 3-7 lbs... hmm... either way... i still love yorkies... no matter what the size... http://imagec11.247realmedia.com/Rea...ault/empty.gif "The earliest record of a Yorkshire Terrier born in the United States dates to 1872. Classes for the breed have been offered at all shows since 1878. Early shows divided the classes by weight - under 5 pounds and 5 pounds and over. Size, however, soon settled down to an average of between 3 and 7 pounds, resulting in only one class being offered in later shows."
