| After 9hrs, we made it through with 4 boys and a girl. I will post pictures later. Sorry that it took so long for me to respond, I have been with them. Jellybean had a puppy every 2hrs. From what I read, this isn't normal. Maybe it was the placenta issue, like someone mentioned. I am going to take her to the vet to make sure she is ok and everything. Should I bring all the pups too? I would assume that they need to stay with their mommy. My stepfather is a breeder so he is coming over tonight to dock their tails and cut their dew claws. He doesnt breed yorkies so he wanted me to find out how short the tails had to be. Anyone know??? Is it too early to do this? All the puppies and mama are doing well now. They are eating and I am trying to get mama to eat something too but she doesnt want anything. She drank a can of chicken broth though! I probably have more questions... but now I can't think of any! I appreciate all your help! Yorkie talk is a great place! |

| hurrah...sounds like everyone is doing great....as for the docking and dew claws....from what i have read...1 1/2" to 2" is the normal length of the tail after docking....some dock the first day...some wait till 3-5 days...i dont think it really matters as long as they are not too small or too weak....congrats on all those healthy puppies

| Congrats on your new babies! We don't dock tails before 3 days old...Give those babies some time to rest up and start nursing before having the procedure done...If pups are on the smaller side, like only 2 ounces I would wait a few days longer...You don't want to lose them now!

| What about the dew claws? Should I wait on both? Alot of people told me to go ahead and get it over with while the mother was so attentive so that she can clean them. I agree with you though, I think its too soon. they are soo small! |

| Those pups won't have adequate clotting mechanisms unti they are about 72 hours old so you'll need to wait until they are about 3 days old. The tails should be cut 1/8th inch into the black on the underside of the tail.

| So glad to hear all is well. Do not have dew claws and tails done til those babies are 3 days old. I cannot remember names on here yet but the reasons have already been posted. And, the timing seemed okay for the individual puppies to be delivered. And, yes, you must take the mom and puppies to the vet for checks. BUT, be sure to keep those babies warm and close to mom and do NOT open their cover for people to see or touch. Puppies are much too young for that and your babies could get in real trouble. I try to advise that the very nature of the vets' office means there are gonna be sick animals and you do not want the babies exposed. Since this is your first litter, your babies have to be checked for hernias, cleft palate, and heart sounds and other physical problems.. This should be done by your vet. The mom might need a shot of oxytocin-that depends on the vet and what he feels when he palpates the mom's tummy. He can also help with expressing milk from the teats. I am not being mean but I want to advise that you find a really good mentor to help with this litter if possible and certainly, to mentor you in the future. Primrose Pat was the most valuable person in my breeding life and now I am trying to pass on some of the knowledge that she gave me. Give those babies wee smoochies from Rini and the crew.. And, CONGRATS! Feel free to PM me if you think I could be of help in any way.. |

| We had our first trip to the vet and all went well. Doc gave mama a shot of Oxytosin to clean out all the junk. He also gave her a shot of Baytril, antibiodic, just to be safe. He noticed that one of the pups had no cord left on their belly button so he gave me some Betadine to clean it with a few times a day. I hope this doesn't cause any problems for the pup. Other than that, all went well. My stepdad will do the dew claws and tails Friday night. So they will be close to 4 days old. Mama wants to get away from her pups for a little bit and come lay with me. I keep puttin her back with them so she can nurse. How long is ok for her to be gone from them these first couple of days? I know she needs a break! She's such a good mommy already, I'm sure she won't be with me long before worrying about them. I have some pictures but when I try to upload, it tells me that the files are too large. I'll post some when I figure it out! Thanks everyone for all of your help! |

| Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Congrats on your litter of 5! Everything sounds great; can't wait to see pics. Have you weighed the pups, curious about their weight. You need to keep track of it to be sure they are gaining and NOT losing. Good Luck and congrats again!

| I do not have a scale and I know that I need to invest in one. Where is the best and cheapest place to get a good quality one? The vet office only has one small one that they weigh small animals on and it was broken today. just my luck. I need to pick one up this week! |
