Help! Pregnant female with low temp!!
 

I have read that a low temperature of 98 is normal for a pregnant female within 12-24 hrs before whelping. 9pm last night it was 98.4 and this morning at 8am, it was 97.7 and hasn't budged since (now 11am.) It has been below 100 since last Sunday 8/17. I check it like every 2-4hrs.

She is acting real sluggish and the pups are moving around like crazy inside! She had 3 accidents last night and she never has them so I think this may be it. She was also "nesting" this morning. I cleaned out my entire walk in closet and she has is all to her self. She has a kennel with towels, as well as an empty kids plastic swimming pool filled with newspaper. I have the closet open but have it closed off with a baby gate so that she has privacy but I can still see her. She likes her little room and seems comfortable. The pool seems to be her favorite. She has been in it for the past 3-4weeks now.

We don't know the exact day of the tie, just that she went into heat on June 14. My vet had an x-ray done about a week and a half ago and saw 4-5 pups. This is her first litter as well as mine. I was looking into getting into breeding but it looks like my dogs were more anxious to go ahead and start!

Please, any advise is appreciated. I am so worried, we have been waiting days now for her to have them. Please no harsh comments as to how I should more educate myself and should have prevented this, it's too late now. I have been reading and reading as much as I can and visiting breeders and vets for the last month. I am ready to welcome my new furbabies, but I need some help! With a temp like 97.7 does it sound like she is going anytime soon?

It sounds like it won't be long now. I don't personally like using newspaper, my preference is towels or blankets. I wish you the best and want to say if you have any questions your always welcome to call me.

i use the temp thing...sometimes it works and others not.just wanted to wish you and the expected mommie a safe delivery and if you hve any questions fell free to call me 618-616-0502, if i typed everything i would be on here all day...lol. my name is tricia
i delivered a litter of 5 last night (shih-tzus) have 2 expecting yorkies in 2 weeks and 2 more litters in a few weeks. its going to be baby heaven around here....and love every minute of it. hope i can help in any way!!!!!

Thank you both for your responses! I may call you if I have questions when she is having them. I appreciate the advice. Do you think she wants me with her? I was just with her for about 10min. She seems to want me with her and is so excited for me to sit with her. She just wags her little tail and hops in my lap. My stepfather bred german shepards, beagles, and rat terriers and he told me to just let them be or things will go wrong. He said to just let mother nature take its course and the more I bother her, the longer it will take her. i just feel like she wants me with her!!

I do NOT agree with leaving her alone to whelp the puppies on her own. There are too many problems that can and do arise quite often. The mom needs you there during the whelping process incase theres a breach birth problem, dry birth, stuck puppy etc etc.....I never leave mine alone and I assist them during whelping whether its coaxing, cutting cords, helping remove a stuck placenta etc. etc..

Make sure you use old towels...that stuff doesn't wash out very well!!!

My girls have their own towels set aside for this reason. Soft white towels so they can be bleached.

I have doggie towels too...LOL...I just wanted to let OP know...and newspaper sucks....

One boy born at 11:40pm. I'm not sure if she has milk because he isn't eating!!

Should I take him away so that she can finish whelping? I read somewhere that I should take all the puppies and put them in a warm towel until shes done.

Also, no placenta came out after this one. I saw something and clamped it with the hemostat but she chewed it off....

What do I do with the umbilical cord?

I'm going to bump this so someone can hopefully help you.

Does the puppy seem hungry?
If so try your best to get him to latch on to mom. By him nursing it will stimulate her to have more contractions.
You may have to gently open up his mouth and put it on mom's nipple. Make sure he is nice and warm first.
Is the umbilical cord cut or did mom chew it?
The cord is usually attached to the placenta.
As long as the cord isn't chewed too short to his belly he should be fine. You want about 1/2 of cord left on his belly.
If the cord isn't cut yet, tie it off with dental floss or a hemostat for one minute to stop blood flow and then cut.

Keep an eye out for the placenta. It sounds like the placenta may have went back into the mom. Try looking to see if you can see it close to the vulva. If you do try gripping and and gently pull it out, be careful as it is slippery.
Otherwise the mom will push it out when another pup is ready to come but it may put a little delay on the delivery.
