| Lola's Temp Drop ! 98.4 Too Early! I'm praying I'm wrong and that she tied earlier and I didn't see it! I'm praying I'm wrong and the thermometer is wrong! Here are her temperature readings Wednesday 10 am 99.9 & 10 pm 101.1 Thursday 10 am 99.3 & 10 pm 99.2 Friday 10 am 98.4 ! She is only around 55 days today.I took her temperature again because I thought it was an error but it came back 98.4 again I honestly would be thrilled if this was July 8th or so that I know she is not too early. I am going to retake her temp in 2 hrs. I checked the puppies heartbeats and I still hear them and their kicking around like crazy too. I am leaving the computer signed on to YT and will keep updating any news.I swear I hope her temp is a little hotter when I take it again at 12:30 .Keep Lola in your prayers and pray that she holds those puppies for at least 3-4 more days.I keep thinking and thinking that I hope that she tied another day earlier than May 11. It's just too early.I don't know if anyone has had a bitch that her temp dropped to 98.4 and went back up...just hoping She is not digging and seems perfectly fine so far. Iwill keep checking and see if she is doing anything different. I have everything ready in my bathtub and things are set up on the corners of the tub. I even got a humidifier to keep in the bathroom if the pups appear premie.I will do everything and anything I have to.The rest I leave it to God & Mother Nature. I will be home all day with her. | Found some great detailed info on temperature drops and whelping Found this info at this site : PWCCA The vigil begins about one week before she is due to whelp. I take a bitch's temperature 2-3 times daily and record the readings to get an indication of HER unique trend in temperature. Most bitches drop to a range between 100.0 and 100.9 the week before whelping. Some will tend to stay above 100.5 while others will dip to 99.7. Most bitches will drop at least a degree from their average prepartium temperature 12-36 hours before whelping. Usually a drop to 99.4 or lower is significant however, it is important to establish your bitch's trend as some can go down this low without whelping. If I have a bitch that is routinely between 99.6 and 100.2 that last week I probably would not consider her drop significant until it was below 99.0. On the other hand, a bitch that has been above 100.5 consistently, may whelp after a temperature drop to 99.6. The more you know your bitch, as well as her line, the better you can use temperature to predict whelping. Further, remember this is an abrupt drop. You may not be catching it at the peak low. If you think it is on the decline (i.e. you take it when you get up in the morning and it is a questionable 99.6 ), take it again in a few hours to see if there is further decline to a more significant temperature. If you have had a significant drop and the temperature begins to climb to normal non-pregnant levels (between 101 and 102) then whelping should be within 3-12 hours as this is just an expected effect of normalizing metabolism and the result of the trembling and restlessness that start before whelping. A somewhat questionable drop (say to 99.5) followed by a return to the temperature she has been all week, is probably not significant especially if she is showing no other signs of labor. Sometimes our bitch will go out for a run with the other dogs or guests come over and she gets excited- keep in mind that exercise or excitement may temporarily cause her temperature to go up above 101. Retake it in a few hours to see that it has come back down to a normal pregnancy level. Any temperature above 102 the week prior to whelping in a bitch that has been laying around (not up and excited about something) would be a cause for concern and may require a trip to your vet to evaluate. Occasionally, a bitch will have a sudden dip in temperature well before the expected whelping date. If no other indications of whelping are present, don't panic, just monitor her. In addition to monitoring temperature, there are several other significant indicators of impending whelping. For a few weeks before whelping, you will be noticing a clear mucus discharge. This will get fairly heavy a few days before whelping but should never anything but clear, or slightly cloudy, mucus. Any other color or consistency is cause for concern. "Lumping up" will be noticed up to a week beforehand. This is where the abdomen periodically gets hard and "lumpy," not smooth and rounded as it normally is. (Think of a sack of large rocks-that is how a lumped up bitch feels) The frequency and intensity of this "lumping up" increases as whelping approaches. The larger the litter, the more dramatic this can be. Once the hour of whelping arrives, the bitch seems "lumped up" almost continuously. Restlessness and digging at bedding are vague indicators and can occur up to a week before whelping. Intense panting and a distant look to the eyes usually do not occur more than 24 hours before whelping- and often start closer to whelping than that. Most bitches will refuse food 12-24 hours before whelping; they often have a little diarrhea and straining the day they are going to whelp. A bitch that scarfs down her breakfast (and keeps it down) and has a normal bowel movement will probably not be whelping in the next 12 hours. I have found that this criteria and the absence of intense/frequent lumping up has helped me on some of my bitches who have had early, premature temperature drops. One needs to look at the whole picture and not be confused when one criteria is causing panic. |

That is great information!! Thanks for sharing! I was a little unnerved last night when Pippin was acting very restless and panting. I took her temp and it was 99.9. I was hoping she will wait a few days. Luckily she is still fine here this morning. This article helps put things in perspective.

| With my girls, I rely more on their behavior as an indicator than anything. I also notice a 'flattening out' of the area between the anus and vagina just before they start with labor. I know you must be worried, especially with the preemies born to Chloe earlier this week. You may want to make sure Lola doesn't get too much activity, especially running and climbing stairs. Usually, they may lose their appetite just before whelping but my Pearl ate just fine right up until whelping this time around so that's no certain indicator. I do hope Lola can hold her babies a few more days. Last edited by Woogie Man; 07-04-2008 at 09:41 AM. Reason: correction |

| She is doing fine. She did vomit bile twice about 30 minutes ago. She didnt eat this morning either. She is not out of the bathroom so she's not in any danger of over excercising or jumping on anything. Woggie man: I'm actually waiting for actual whelping signs too.She seems calm so Im ok now. I will keep everyone updated. Genie,Cookie ,Lola & Angel |

| Hey Genie, I just returned a PM to you, but please keep us posted. Chloe threw up bile and began to lightly pant and dig on Friday, then Saturday and Sunday I noticed a temp drop. As you know, she had them early Monday morning - so it was about three days.

| Her temp went back up to 99.1 now .If she lasts 3 days-4 days before whelping then I'd feel better about that for sure. She didnt want to eat anything at all today not even water. I tried several things and then I just let her sleep. Finally around 6 pm I got some chicken, rice and eukanuba puppy food. At first she sniffed it and walked away but then she came right back and gobbled it all up and she even had seconds! I dont think she will whelp on her due date or close to it. Her belly today was in tight lumps, like a bag of marbles where you can clearly see the puppies shapes. I will deffinately keep everyone posted on any changes. Genie,Cookie,Lola & Angel |

| Lola I have a feeling she is one who runs a bit of a low temp normally. If you are there with her and keeping a close eye..I would not take it again for a few days, since it is not a good sign of whelping in her case. Every few hours is stressful for her and you... Digging and nesting is not accurate, vomiting and refusing to eat is not...laying down, panting and pushing is a sure sign she is whelping!!...if your bitch notices the "leader of the pack" is worried and fretting, then she will be stressed...if all is well with the leader, then all is well in her world too...the temperament of the breeder is just as vital as the temperament of the dog. PS..you may find it hard to believe, but I rarely even take temps before..after whelping, I take them twice a day for a week or so... Some years ago, a friend wanted to go shopping..her girl was 59/60 days. We decided to take her temp and if it was normal, we figured we could go out for a few hours and all would be fine...the temp was 101..so off we go. She got home 4 hrs later to a litter of puppies... |

| PAT, THANK YOU! It is exactly what I believe about Lola! Her normal temp range has been 98.7-99.7 So lastnight I reviewed the temp record I've been keeping and that's exactly what it is. She's really never been over 100 I think she will deffinately let me know with the panting and pushing lol.I'm only taking her temp tonight. She is doing very well this morning. She's been extremely pampered by my family and myself. She's away from the 2 Yorkies we have here so there is no rough playing with her either. You need to see all Looney Tunes receiving blankets that my hubby bought for her puppies! I went to get flannel fabric at Walmart and he tells me " Why don't you get her these baby looney tunes flannel blankies? LOL Her belly seems to have gotten much smaller but I still feel the pups and hear their heartbeats so I know their in there! lol She looked so bloated like a week ago . 7 Days to go! | Keep in mind also that low blood sugar can cause the temperature to be low. If she has not eaten or is not eating much that can effect her temperature. You could give her a little Nutri-cal or corn syrup and water and see if that will bring the temperature up. |

| I thought about low blood sugar also but she is eating though. Not as much as I'd like to see but she's eating on her own time. Not when I serve her lol. She's probably eating 1 cup of food per day. I've had to serve her 1/2 cup twice a day.. I hear her get up at night and eat and drink some. She was eating about 1 1/2 cup a day but not this week. I gave her some Nutrical today but she didnt even want that. I know once she has these babies it will be another hurdle getting her to eat enough to keep producing enough milk for her babies! Right now I'm just letting her relax and sit with me as much as she wants.Clingy is not even the word ! lol She scratched my hand like 20 times really fast so I can sit back down with her.Her eyes follow my every move . For some reason going through all this with her has made me bond tremendously with her. She is my daughter's dog and now she wants nothing to do with my daughter and only looks for me.
