Ahh! I wish I were..There is a lot of healling work that needs to be done..I just try to " pay if forward" when an opportunity presents itself..it is not always easy though. Thanks.

Very interesting thread.

I don't place puppies before they are 12 weeks old. The period between 7-12 weeks may be for bonding but it is also for socialization skills and my puppies are the Best socialized puppies one will ever come into contact with.

Yes the economy is down; yes there are more breeders out there; but quality is still quality. It may take a little longer to find homes but they are there.

Just curious about not letting puppies go until 12 weeks. If you have another dog in your home can a younger pup get the necessary socialization from them or only from their parents and litter pups? Just wondering and trying to learn all I can.

if you have an older dog at home and you bring a puppy home..you will have issues.. if you bring 2 puppies home together, they will have each other at same energy levels.. a new puppy is used to being with littermates..
if you have a one year old at home, they would do well.. age of the puppies
when adopted is about the health and weight at that age.., are they properly weaned? each case is different.. a puppy wants to chew bite and play.. can the other dog handle it?:)

Alright, Alright, I'm sure you guys are sick of having all these pups hanging around that aren't sold so I'll do you all a big favor and let you send them to me. :D LOL. Not trying to make light of the economy but I couldn't help posting. I hope you guys find great homes for your pups. Elaine

:lol tears I was just going to offer my services as well. I can take on maybe two more babies....I know it will be a big help and lessen your strain :p:tongue:

Socialization is not the only area affected. Any dog goes through an adjustment period when they are in a new environment. The effects this can have not eating, still sub-par immune systems, etc will have a much greater impact in a much shorter amount of time on a 8 week puppy who is just learning social skills vs a 12 week puppy who has developed social skills and a better since of independence.

Ideally, the new owner can spend time with the puppy before bringing it home so that the puppy is familiar with him/her. Spending time w/ a pup when they are very young is not going to be sufficient as the pup will not be at a stage developmentally that the interaction will have a huge impact on them, whereas it would if they were exposed to their new human owners later on (say, 8 week range and later). (Not sure I explained that like I meant to--I'm at a loss for how to word it...:()

BTW, there is a sticky at the top of this section that briefly describes the developmental stages of a puppy and is broken down by age that may give you more info.

8 week visits would be great.. ideally a transition period would be great.. if they lived close .. new owners...they could take puppy for play dates between 8-10 weeks to separate from the pack :animal-pa

Yes, agreed! With a previous litter, I let 2 pups :aimeeyork:aimeeyork leave a day shy of 10 weeks. The two were going to live in Florida with mother and daughter. They had both been to my home several times to visit with them since they were 5 1/2 weeks. My thinking was, they were going to be here for a:xmastree:nother week for Christmas , which was being celebrated low key, just mom, dad, daughter and brother, all adults. I was more comfortable with them going through their adjustment period HERE, while they were together, 20 min from me vs in another state. During the week long period, they returned with the pups to my home for extended visits 3 times. (Lucky me!) They finally left for their new out of state homes at a little over 11 weeks.

Don't you wish ALL cases could be that easy on you. They were actually the first two pups from my own breedings(s) that I ever placed. It made the good-bye much easier :wavecry: on me, being they were the first kids I let go of. Now the good-byes since...I plead the 5th;)...

That makes sense....I got Gracie at 8 weeks Izzy was just over 1 1/2 years old. They immediately bonded and Izzy seemed to assume the role of both her dog mommy and her playmate. You're right about the biting. Gracie would grab onto Izzy's back leg and Izzy would drag Gracie around the living room floor by her leg...it was pretty funny. Izzy keeps Gracies face, ears, eyes and teeth clean. They are best buds and get along great together.
