i think 8 weeks would be ok for the thriving , healthy , weaned puppy only if the new owner is aware of their needs and the ..window of opportunity.. at that age. they can easily be trained at this age.. jmo:animal-pa |

I think it's a case of simple economics. The economy has caused a decrease in demand and all of the pet owners that are breeding have increased the supply. When the supply exceeds the demand prices must fall to generate interest. I breed for my next show dog and for show money so with pup prices falling and travel expenses rising I'll just have to breed and show less in the future. My concern is that if Show breeders slow down production and pet owners continue to breed poor quality dogs than the yorkie will end up with even more health issues and no longer end up looking like yorkies. Education is the key when breeding and alot of pet owners don't feel the need for education. They love their pet and assume that all yorkies should be like theirs. Most have no knowledge of their dogs ancestory or the health history of the lines. Protecting the purity of this breed gets harder all of the time. Hopefully tighter finances will discourage pet owners from breeding pet quality dogs and will be good for our breed in the end. |

Since this isn't technically about breeding... I would encourage anyone who thinks it's a good idea to place pups at 8 weeks to take a look in some of the other sections of YT first. There have been a seemingly high number of people lately posting with emergencies that their pups won't eat, scared, not acting as pups should in short. And the common link between all of them is that they got the pup at a very young age---8 weeks and even younger. Run the theory of letting them go at 8 weeks by those owners and see if they agree with you. This is a general rule of thumb for Yorkies--if you have someone suggesting otherwise to you, I would recommend you look for advice elsewhere. It's one of those instances where I follow the lead of veteran, respected breeders and you'll be hard pressed to find any who place their pups so early. (Did I mention it is a YTCA guideline as well.) IMO, this is an aspect where you err on the side of caution. Sure, things *may* end up with a happy ending, but why chance it? |

Pure bred does not necessarily mean well bred. |

As a newer breeder, 3 years ... I feel that My puppies are valuable both financially and for the way they have been raised.. but I might be the only one who believes it.. I have one puppy available :animal36 but I can't part with him even though I should. Am I crazy to think he is worth two thousand minimum.? :p But I need to do what is right by finding the right homes for puppies I bring into the world. This means I might end up keeping my babies longer than I had planned.. If a puppy is very well trained, then he is more valuable. JMHO :animal-pa |

I think people look in the paper and see AKC yorkies for $450, so they think that they are getting a good deal! Just happened to my friend, she bought a female for $350 and the puppy died 3 days later. You get what you pay for and some people have to learn the hard way. I'm new to breeding, this is my second litter. I have done tons of research and I hope one day I can have champion show yorkies, that's my dream! |

Very, very interesting conversation. Someday all the information you all are posting will help someone make a wise choice. Applies to me, too. Every so often I run across a Newbie while posting welcomes that say they are looking for a Yorkie. Always tell them to go to the breeders section and learn before they buy. Love to hear ethical breeders discussing.:D |
