| Tail Docking Sassy had a singleton. She is 5 oz. Do you think I should still wait til she is 10 days old to get her tail docked? She is 2.1 oz bigger than Sassy's last litter was. Thanks! |

| You would never wait that long to get the tails docked. I do mine at 4 days, sometimes 5 days if the puppy is very small. As long as the puppy is nursing well and not a weak puppy then it would be safe to get her tail docked at 5 days, JMO. |

| The two breeders I know out her in California do them at 10 days old. The last pup I had done, came back shaking and it scared the hell out of me. When I used to breed labs, I had them done before they were 5 days old. But these breeders seem to think the pup would bleed to death (haven't talked to them about this 5 oz pup yet though). Am I better off letting the experienced breeder dock the tail or the vet? My breeder lives 1 1/2 hrs away from me. |

| How big are your pups when they're born? I would much rather have them done sooner than later because I don't want to put the pup through any pain. Thanks!! |

| My rule of thumb is 4 days. I would never wait for 10 days... that doesn't make sense to me. The bigger they get, they bigger everything gets and there is more blood. I do the clamp and twist method and have never had one bleed. It sounds to me that you are inexperienced at docking a tail yourself so I would definitely take the puppy to the vet and have them do it. Have them walk you through it if you plan to do this for yourself in the future. Also, I did tails and dewclaws on 2 puppies yesterday. One weighed 4oz. at birth and the other was 5oz. at birth.

| I've never heard of 10 days. I waited till mine were 4 days old this time with Nala Because they were so tiny. Several under 3 oz. Even with that extra day those poor puppies cried a lot more then normal. My old vet would not do them after 3 days. And I mean down to the hour. He said it hurts them too much otherwise.

| She should be docked at 3-5 days depending on weight and health, if she is not thriving, wait till you get a consistant weight gain. An exception would be, you don't want to stress a weak puppy, always better to delay.

| Wow! I am sooo glad I asked. I've had two California breeders tell me to do it at 10 days. I will never again let the breeder dock them at 10 days. No way! The last pup came back to me shaking and I was horrified. I ended up keeping her and she doesn't have a psychological issues thank god! :-) I couldn't see myself doing the tails/dewclaws myself either. Now I need to find a vet/experienced person in Southern California to do this for me asap. She is now 2 days old, so we're getting down to the wire here. Anyone know of any good breeders/vets in Socal? Thanks again for the help!!! |
