I have never heard of any breeder waiting that long. It would be very bloody and painful in my opinion. The length you dock the tail also makes a difference on how much they bleed and how painful it is. Many vets (and some breeders) cut the tails way to short. I like to dock mine just past where the black meets the brown on the underside of the tail. I used to dock mine right on the line where the black meets the brown but for show that is just a little bit too short. Many puppy buyers are uneducated about what the proper length is and some think there should be practically no tail at all because that is what they have seen. If you take her to a vet then you tell him what length you want the tail or he might take off too much. Remember the AKC standard says they should be docked a medium length. Be sure to get the dewclaws too.
