| First Time Breeder, Looking for info i am a first time breeder and i've been doing my research for about 5 months now, and it seems like you can only learn so much. my female is coming into heat now, she's had a few litters before, so she knows what she's doing, the problem is that i won't know exactly what i'm doing. any and all information on tieing, pregnancy, whelping and pre-natal care will all be very very much appreciated. thanks everyone

| Hello and welcome to YT...Read everything you can get your hands on...Ideally it would be helpful to have a mentor that can assist with breeding and whelping but that is not always possible... I would highly suggest reading: Canine Reproduction and Whelping (A breeders guide) by Myra Savant Harris R.N. and also : Puppy Intensive Care ( A breeders guide to care of newborn puppies) also by Myra Savant Harris R.N. There is a lot of good information in both of these books... You also want to read and know the standard for the Yorkshire Terrier that is set by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America so you can determine if your yorkies are good representations of the breed...By doing so you are helping to keep the yorkies the beautiful breed they have become!

| Hi and Welcome~! Quote:
Read everything you can get your hands on., First and foremost have your dog tested. The stud also. I've been sending this in lots of emails to others. http://malteseluv.homestead.com/whel...tml#anchor_182 Its simple and easy and a good thing to just keep Fav. placed for quick reference. Tho other sites are better and go into much more detail. Others already gave you some great ones Do your homework before you breed and you'll be happier for it Also it may help you to read some posts here about things others here have went thru with C- sections and sick or malformed puppies. We've really had a few sad things happen You can never learn enough We are here for you. BTW..I LOVE your siggie

| i would also recommend debbie Jenson's website. She shares a wealth of knowledge there. Apparently, your female had her litters before you got her. Make sure you do have her tested for Burcellouis since she has been with other males. This is an important test for ALL breeding dogs. They also need to both be tested for any gentic disorders and bile acid tested for sure before breeding. That stuff can get really nasty if your dogs get it. Read, learn all you can and try to find someone that lives close to you to be your mentor and that will let you whelp a litter or two with her so you can have hands on experience by the time your girl is due. Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions and I will try to answer them and I'm sure other breeders on here will, too. |

| I think here on YT is a wonderful resource for you and I have a couple of books by Myra Savant-Harris that I really like. I have to say that I am not a breeder yet though so I have no actual experience to base it on but I think I've made the decision that it is something I want to do. I think...... |

| wow thanks for all the support guys. i have looked at the debbie jensen website, and it really is awesome. very knowlegdable. i will definately make her an appointment to get tested for belluc... don't remember how to spell it lol and i will get my male tested as well. the vet checked them over physically and said there is no reason they shouldn't have fine puppies but will definately get them checked over more. i will surely look for those books, stop in at a Chapters and try to find them. i do have a question now that i'm thinking of it, are there any early signs that the dam will need a c-section when whelping or is it just kind of like ok, she's going into labour and no puppies are coming after a while, call the vet?

| Welcome to YT! At the first sign of labor, please alert your vet and your mentor (if you are lucky enough to have one) and have their phone numbers posted in the whelping area. |

| I have my girls x-rayed about 5 days before delivery date. The vet can usually determine the number size of the pups and if there might be any problems. This is a very good tool and should not be skipped. At that time, you can keep the vet on call and make an appointment for a c-section if needed. If she goes into labor and doesnt present a puppy within 1 hour and there is heavy contractions, there is a problem and she needs assistance. I can usually turn the puppy if this happens and get it out sucessfully, but that is not for the inexperienced. Please have your girl and the stud shecked for the usual health problems that Yorkeis have: bile acid/liver shunt, legg perthes, hip displasia, collapsing trachea, patellar luxation. Good luck!!!! |

| i will definately get the vet to do furthur checking on the pair. and i will probably do that x-ray thing 5 days before, that's a really good idea! my male weighs 2.4KG and my female weighs 3.7KG so she is bigger which is good, hopefully she'll have in between size puppies when they are full grown. so she came into heat (when i noticed) on friday the 11th, now i've read that they bleed for about 9 days and then to breed them after that. which are the best day(s) to breed them and how many times do i allow them to tie?

| I usually breed twice skipping a day in between. I try for the 9th or 10th day for the first breeding. Some girls start standing for the stud early and go out of heat early also. I had one girl that if I didnt breed her on the 7th day, I missed her. |

| my female is finally accepting the male to try and breed her, but he's just a smidge too short and can't quite get it. i was just wondering, i read on that debbie jensen site that you can hold the female and guide the male in, i was trying that but they don't want to do anything when i'm too close, they just stop. i don't know what to do now?
