I felt so sad about the little cleft palate boy. After reading all the literature and seeing his picture I was encouraged that he was going to make it. So sad. :( |
I posted this two other thread sections (one of them was on accident), but thought I'd give you guys an update here too. Thank you for all your support here! You are great! I also wanted to say congrats to Debbie on your little girl's leg. I love those sucess stories & it's people like you looking for ways to make it right, instead of just accepting it, that makes you awesome! I want to be just like that & help others to do the same! I really admire you! Keep it up & I'm anxious to see what the vet says! Okay, so on to the sad update....I had such a hard time with this decision on what was best to do. I've always been a fighter & like to look at the brighter side & hope fot the best in any situation. Yesterday afternnon we had to put the puppy to sleep, which was so out of character for me & something I was fortunate to not have to do, until now. YorkieNewbie22 posted pictures on the other thread of her puppy which from the looks alone, that's EXACTLY what my little guy looked like. I had such a hard time finding pictures to see what to compare to. Those of you who don't know, you'll want to check it out. I was excited to feed the little one with the dropper/bottles until he got old enough to get to more solids & was SO attached because of doing it. I had talked to my husband about keeping him, so that was the plan. I read so much about the complications that come though with pnemonia, liquid in their lungs & the surgeries when they have the cleft lip & palate. Many with minor clefts seem to have in grow in as older pups & do just fine. It was so encouraging to find success stories & see cute pictures of dogs that made it through. It also seemed that the hardest part was just getting them through the first 6-8 weeks. I was fine with the sacrifice for that long if it meant saving a life & having a little guy who wouldn't suffer. I told myself that as long as the vet didn't say that it was severe, I would work through it no matter what. From what I read, the sever pallats can still be correctable through surgeries, but it seemed to me to be a very risky surgery that had a complication rate; especially if it was severe. Plus, I realy thought it was just a cleft lip & not the pallate at all. Boy was I wrong. Now I know better what to look for though. With the vet saying it was very severe, it just broke my heart. I have so much more appreciation for those of you who have been breeding for a long time & even those who haven't, but have to make theses tough calls when something goes wrong with a puppy. I really do look up to you all so much more now & think that anyone thinking about getting into breeding needs to take a look at these situations & ask how they might handle them. For me, I don't think I have it in me to do it again. It's not worth the risk. I absolutely LOVE my Yorkies to pieces & couldn't image losing a mommy or another puppy. (Maybe this is all just in my current sorrows, we'll see). Anyway, sorry to ramble & share the negative story... thanks again to all of you who have been following our story. I hope it helps someone else sometime too. I wish the best for all of you! I know these things don't happen often, but thought it may help to be a little prepared & give a little insight to anyone who may need it now, or later! P.S. Sonya & Debbie both PMd me offering to post pictures for me, so you should see them sometime soon on the cleft post too. (Thanks ladies)! |
Bless your heart, I can feel your sorrow.:( You did the right thing. RIP little one. |

Oh my ! when is Nala's due date? How much has she gain? I think I saw Ruby has gain around 4 pounds is this right ? Mine has gained around 3 pounds, I'll see if I can post a current belly pic here. |
Quote:
WHen Josey had 6 pups she gained 3 pounds I belive. |
I think 4 lbs. is a lot! And so does Ruby. This line of dogs tends to have large puppies, and they settle out in weight pretty early too, usually by around 6-7 months. Looking at our standards vs. our little yorkies, I think the standards have a heavier bone structure too. But there is no way around it -- Ruby is HUGE. |
2 Attachment(s) oh no, mine has gained a little less than 3 pounds but I think she will hit the 3 by the time she is do, I was talking about your Ruby asking if it was right that she gain 4 pounds. And I think 3 pounds is a lot still, mine is big I wonder how Ruby looks by now. her Pre pregnancy was 7 pounds 2 0z and now she is 9 pounds 12 oz. My other female kitty was 5 pounds and put up a little less of 2 pounds and she had 5 babies. Here some current belly pics. |

Wow, your mom is really big. She looks like she has put on more than 3 lbs. I'll try to update the Ruby Belly pictures soon. Her head/chest area are really small, I think she has a small rib cage. But, then her body just balloons out and today her perineal area (under her tail) started to bulge. Not the bulge just before a puppy is born, but a nice sized bulge. The only way she can lay is flat on her stomach on the cool kitchen floor. Poor Baby. Do you have any swelling of the nipple area yet? Ruby is pretty flat there so far, which gives me hope she won't go early. Anyone else have any estimates as to how long before a birth after the nipple area swells? |
Lilly has gained 2lbs... she was a smidge over 5lbs and now she is a smidge over 7lbs. She is expecting 3-5 puppies. The vet wouldn't confirm because they were too wiggly :D But, to me she looks like a house! I felt really bad for her today because we got about 3 inches of snow... and her belly was dragging in it  So I shoveled a space for her to do her business ;) |

they say we may get a bit too this weekend...I'm so sick of snow and winter! Quote:
Horrible so called husband...Long story...lol Anyways I wrote on the calendar the date I bred her. But being upset I think I wrote down the wrong day. I know...thats awful BUT I think she's due any day now :) Shes gained about 4 lbs..but it LOOKS like 10!!!! lol She is a larger Morkie 8 lbs. Quote:
And Nala is swollen as can be and a good bit of discharge |
I know , she really looks big. her bottom nipples are getting big as well. I'm just hoping for at least 5 - 6 days more. When is Lilly due? I wished we had some snow down here...we are toasting :D |
