I'm not either one...just someone with a strong interest in the breed and a desire to learn more. My primary goal is just to know as much as I can about the breed, the exhibitors, and reputable breeding practices so that I can choose my pets wisely from now on. But I do have an interest in possibly showing one day.

Blitz, I know this to be untrue. I have multiple reasons for not showing, among them that I have personally seen inferior dogs win. I believe it was in this thread I told about how I was advised by a big (real big, famous) exhibitor to dye my dog's hair. With the limited time I have available I can't afford to waste it playing those kinds of games. It has to be a very insecure exhibitor who can look at my pedigrees and call me a BYB.
Hi Dudley. You don't play because the game is not always fair then? Geez, which sport is fair all the time? And as far as cheating... just look at the Patriots It happens in all sports.

I understand if you don't want to go through the time, effort and money it takes to prove your dogs but please don't make it like it's not worthy of your time. It's a seriously competitive sport.

A pedigree would never impress me unless the dog it belonged to was outstanding. I've seen junk with great pedigrees. Show me an awesome dog and THEN I want really want to see his pedigree.

Peace.

I would love to see pictures of your dogs. Have you considered selling to show homes? Even if you don't have time to show yourself maybe you can find someone who seriously enjoys showing and you can help them get started with showing your lines. I think another important part of being a Yorkie breeder/exhibitor is also being a mentor. I never had what I would call a real mentor but I wish I had one.

I have to say i agree with this. Just because a dog has a ton of champions in its lines doesn't mean the dog is worthy to be shown or bred. Genetics are a trickly thing...great dogs don't always produce great offspring. You shouldn't decide to breed a dog based on its pedigree alone...the dog must prove that itself measures up and is an excellent example of the breed.

Sometimes I do well and make a profit sometimes I don't. We do a good deal of training and boarding Yorkies, so I am able to off set loss that way.. In the long run, I can say if I accounted for my time, not just expenses, I'm sure I am beyond the negative in profit.... That said, here's something to think about.....

Every breeder on this board started somewhere…. Let me tell you the story of our humble beginning as something to consider. I had an excellent mentor….. She was passing the torch of 25 years of knowledge and experience to me (how lucky was I?)…. My second litter was due being whelped by my most beautiful dog (not to mention that I was also attached to her as much as I was my children)…. Talk about a textbook pregnancy…. 42nd day ultrasound showed 6 very well proportioned, small puppies…. Delivery started…..no distress….easy labor on the first puppy… then nothing….and nothing… I was prepared…. I had read all of the books…. Not to fear, middle of the day, no emergency call…. We headed to the vet just to be sure (12 miles)….she died in my hands as I walked through the office door…. I called my mentor in horror and unbelievable grief….she said, “you’ll know in a few weeks if this is for you.” …. She said that because I had 6 very tiny puppies (5 saved through c/s) that needed to be nursed every two hours for weeks….I buried my Gizmo where our new kennel stands today and got started with her babies…..I would hardly close my eyes b/f it was time to feed again….two weeks into it, one just didn’t thrive….now I was at wit’s end….three days later one aspirated on the feeding tube….I was done, called my mentor and told her to come get them all… she said, “no, this was your choice”…. 20 or so weeks later of round the clock care, One by one, these tiny replicas of their mom, of whom I had become a surrogate mother, were picked up by new owners, placed under various Christmas trees….and absolutely delighted special families….One to 4 kids, one to a wife of 35 years, one to an only child, and one to new bride. To this day, I still grieve for my Gizmo, to this day I still check up on every puppy I sell… I’ve shoveled truck loads of poop, dried gallons of pee, built kennels, torn down kennels, delivered puppies at 2:00 am on every holiday celebrated by man (even my kids birthday parties which I had to miss)….Breeding is a complete sacrifice of everything else when the moment counts b/c your female is counting on you for everything….If you bring puppies into this world they are your responsibility and yours alone. My mentor made that quite clear to me. If you do not have the ability to deal with the difficulties with the same passion as you delight in the rewards, keep you little girls as a pets….. If you do have the ability, this could be the blooming of a wonderful new career…one that I love more with every pooper scooper full….
Our 5 year old yorkie, Jingles died last month of a collapsed trachea. Is this from poor breeding? Mary Anne

Collapsed trachea is a common problem in little dogs but it's said if they have one that they should not be bred. For small breeds they reccomend a harness over a collar because of many small breeds being prone to this condition. I'm not sure if it can also come from bad breeding but my guess is yes it could. Maybe, someone else can add more about the breeding end and whether it's also a cause of a collapsed trachea.

I'll PM you with photos and info about the most prominent names in my pedigrees. So far I have not sold any of my puppies for breeding or showing. Knowing how badly I underestimated the commitment required to breed and show properly and humanely, I could not let a puppy go with full rights to someone I don't know very very well. This will all come in due time. Best, Dudley

Default Stopping Puppy Mills

In our area, there is a general message on several boards which lists an email..... If you send an email requesting the info, you will get a little free packet of info that I though was very informative.... In fact, I've used some on my website..... The information is completely free and I believe they are trying to get as much of this out to the general public as possible... We might be able to post some kind of sticky link here or something.... I thought it was a very valuable tool for buyers.... Very good questions, etc...

The email address is

As an extremely honest and fair-minded person, some of this stuff is too hard for me to be around. Why would you fault me for that?

I guess I don't see the breedings I do with my Yorkies filled with troubles and risk... Oh sure it can and has happened but, I do everything that I can to be sure that my female and males are healthy and sound going into any breeding. I have both males and females tested to be sure that I'm not risking passing on unwanted traits. And it is JMO that there really isn't a profit to be made if your doing your breeding the right way.
It is for these reasons that the few breedings that I do with my Yorkies are very well thought out ahead of time and as was stated earlier many of my other dates and events have been put on hold because one of my girls needed me by their side and to me nothing comes before that. Terri
