Default Under The yorkie Spell

Ok., Here's my delima...
I adopted all my yorkies, Got them when they are adults already...
I just adopted A yorkie boy a little about a week ago with medical condition. He is the sweetest boy ever!
I was on Vacation Last week and brought all of them with me., I bought a newspaper while sitting and waiting for my ride and came accross an ad! A YORKIE Adult female! For $300! I called the people and they sold her to me! They have several yorkies, maybe 11? When I took her home with me, she seems lethargic... I took to the vet and the vet said they needed to do x-ray bcoz she appeared pregnant to him! Results came back and SHE IS!!! I called the people I got her and ask them about her being pregnant. THey told me, "Well, maybe she is. There's too many of them I cannot keep track" Ha?!!!
I am setting here, wondering... The vet say, it appeared she will have her pups April or right around May!!! I am soooo lost, don't know what to do. THis is more than I expect.

I am wanting to give her back to her original owner but my husband told me, there's no way!!! By the look and environment she comes from! So, dirty and just not suitable for her pups to grow.

The lady told me that she might have been bred by her males, I asked her which one., she doesn't know. I also asked her they are all related and she told me some of them!!! But then, she told me "don;t worry, they will be small pups, all of them are small!" I wasn't even asking her that question!

Wow, what a surprise for you. I know you must be scared for both the Mama and her babies. Is there anyone near you that can help you and give you advice or assistance?

Sorry, I can't help you; I don't know anything about breeding. I thought from your title, you were just going to tell how cute your yorkies were. Hopefully someone can point you in the right direction. I'm glad you rescued the little girl, but you know what the say, "No good deed goes unpunished." Here's a link to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. There are several Indiana listings. http://www.ytca.org/breeder4.html#IN The ones with an "R" are involved in rescue. Maybe one of them can offer you some assistance.

You'll be able to find plenty of help here. Bless you for keeping her! You do want to start researching though so you can be ready as you've already started obviously. You can do a search on google with keywords such as canine whelping and find some good resources. Ask any questions in particular and they shall be answered lol.

It also very helpful to search the archives here at YT. Before she's due, you'll need to get together a basic whelping kit. These are things to have before her birth and a whelping box. The more you read, the more prepared you'll be.

Best of luck, you'll do just fine. Don't forget to post your questions as they come.

Susan

Well you got your $300 plus invested. I'm sure how shocked you were to find this out. And how crazy is it that the lady can't tell you anything about it. I just hope its not a close sibling, but guess all we can do is say ask what you need to and best of luck with this. Maybe this lady needs to be turned in when you call the rescue place. Especially if the conditions are unhealthy

Wow..that is a dilemma. Hopefully, your girl has no health issues beyond her pregnancy. Did she check out o.k. at the vet? There are many here better qualified than me to advise you but I'll give it a stab with some basics. At this time you'll want to make sure she is getting a high quality diet. Is she eating well for you? I think vitamins would be a good idea for now, too. There are many good threads here if you search relating to whelping puppies. I would think you would want to do other research. Try googling 'breeding Yorkshire Terriers' or maybe 'canine pregnancy' and see what you find. Get a basic foundation of knowledge and then, as the time comes, you may have specific questions that some may be able to answer here. Have you ever helped in birthing puppies of any breed before? If not, and you can't find someone to be there with you, you may have to rely on your vet. This is really a 'wild card' pregnancy. You can't have any idea about the father's background or the mother's for that matter. I would try to get what info I could from the previous owner. Don't panic...time is short but it sounds like you have maybe 5 weeks to prepare. The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog by Ann Sevane is an excellent book. I'm sure I omitted many things and others will help guide you further. In the meantime, take a few deep breaths and do your research. Best of luck to you.

I'm not sure if it's medically advisable, but you may also want to ask your vet about the possibility of having her spayed instead of going through with the pregnancy

Well, you could maybe contact a reputable Yorkie rescue and ask them if anyone can help you out. Maybe, they can keep her with someone experienced with puppy birth until after. Then they can find homes for the pups and you can keep the mom like you originally wanted to do. I'm not sure what other advice to give. Good Luck. Elaine

she is eating great for me. I am feeding her Canidae as what my others eat too. She seems hungry all the time though. So, should I feed her another kind food then? Like what? When she go into labor, do I need to separate her from everybody? I don;t have any kids my own so, not really familiar with the birthing process. She only weights around 4-5lbs and the vet told me, she might be having more than 4 pups. Overall she is healthy.

I'm no expert, but have a female that has had one litter. A pregnant female should be eating a good quality (I understand that Canidae is good) PUPPY food and as long as she isn't becoming overweight, she can eat all she wants. She's eating not only to nourish herself, but her puppies too. When she whelps, yes, she should be in a quiet spot/room away from any other dogs. A good website to visit and learn is debbiejensen.com. It will tell you many things you need to know form pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, whelping, and care for mama and puppies after birth. Go there, read, read, & re-read....then google yorkie whelping and read anything and everything else you can find. You'll do fine and when the time comes there are many of us here eager and willing to help you and/or learn right along with you.
You are great for saving that poor girl from that lady you bought her from. Good luck to you and your new little mama-to-be. We'll be right here for you through it all.
