| ![]() Okay for those yorkie breeders I am curious about a couple things. I've been talking to lots of breeders and have had a couple tell me some things that I was pretty sure were a bit odd but would like some feedback from you guys. I had one lady tell me that her five month old yorkie ( no champion, just pet quality ) was $900 on the day I called her but would go up to $1200 the very next day because as they get older they become more expensive. This person also has teeny tiny teacup yorkies for sale $5000 and up. Is this normal pricing? I have read that yorkies should never be bred if they are under 5lbs but lots of the people I spoke with told me they breed their 2 - 2.5lb yorkies. I read that to do that would seriously endager and probably kill them. Just found it odd that people were bragging about it. Is it normal for yorkies to be over 10 pounds and still be healthy? Also when looking to see how the pup will turn out should I pay more attention to mom or dad ( who gets more of the genes passed down)? Do you keep your yorkies shaved in the summer if you aren't showing? Thanks guys, just a couple questions I'd love your opinion on. |

| ![]() IMO...the lady selling the 5 month old pup was just using a sales tactic to get you to buy her dog. In my area people usually start dropping the price of their pups if they are not sold by 3 or 4 months. The only ones that should go up in price as they get older are the show prospects. I would stay away from anyone selling teacups for $5,000, red flag. In my area you can get tiny Yorkies for about $1200. There are many breeders that breed tiny Yorkies. IMO it is unethical, and it is dangerous for the mom. Those that do it, IMO, are either uneducated or they just don't care because they are doing it for the money. The tiny ones usually have lots of healthy problems. Yorkies over 10 lbs are usually very healhy. People here on YT refer to them as 'teapot' Yorkies. You can do a search here on YT for 'teapot' and just see how many there are. Those that turn out over 7 lbs are generally less expensive but they make wonderful loving companions. Some pups take after the mom and some after the dad and some have characteristics of both, just like in people. Both parents should be good representatives of the breed. It takes about two years to grow a good show coat on a Yorkie and lots of works. The coat on a show Yorkie is not cut until they are through being shown. Many people keep their Yorkies in shorter coat if they are not show dogs. Good luck in your search for a lifelong companion. Last edited by bjh; 02-03-2008 at 08:58 AM. |

| ![]() Yes, I would definately stay away from that lady. She was trying to use a pressure tactic on you. Go up $300 overnight, hardly!

| ![]() I had one lady tell me that her five month old yorkie ( no champion, just pet quality ) was $900 on the day I called her but would go up to $1200 the very next day because as they get older they become more expensive. This person also has teeny tiny teacup yorkies for sale $5000 and up. Is this normal pricing? No, this is not normal...breeders that have older puppies typically sell them for the same price as their younger puppies of the same quality or lower the price...they do not increase the price as they get older. You may see an older show potential puppy be priced higher than a younger pet quality puppy though..that is normal. I have read that yorkies should never be bred if they are under 5lbs but lots of the people I spoke with told me they breed their 2 - 2.5lb yorkies. I read that to do that would seriously endager and probably kill them. Just found it odd that people were bragging about it. Most reputable breeders prefer to breed females that are at least 5lbs, although some will breed females that are over 4lbs if they are very knowledgeable, know the females lines well, and know that females in her lines are free-whelpers. You will never see a reputable breeder breed a dog under 4lbs...if they do, they are not reputable in my opinion. Is it normal for yorkies to be over 10 pounds and still be healthy? Yes...as long as the dog isn't overweight. Dogs with larger frames should weigh more than dogs with smaller frames. However, a 10lb yorkies is over standard. Also when looking to see how the pup will turn out should I pay more attention to mom or dad ( who gets more of the genes passed down)? I think it's important to look at mom and dad and also grandparents if you are able to. A lot of the times the breeder won't have all the dogs on site, but if they come from show lines, you should be able to research the puppy's pedigree and find info out on the dogs in its lines. Do you keep your yorkies shaved in the summer if you aren't showing? I don't show or breed, but I would never shave my yorkie...I love the long coats I think one of the best sites you should look at to learn what a reputable yorkie breeder is is www.ytca.org This is the parent club of the Yorkshire Terrier and the one that sets the standard and ethical guidelines for its breeders. Definitely read all the info on that site. And there they have a list of breeders as well.

| ![]() [QUOTE=sarajane;1726056] I had one lady tell me that her five month old yorkie ( no champion, just pet quality ) was $900 on the day I called her but would go up to $1200 the very next day because as they get older they become more expensive. This person also has teeny tiny teacup yorkies for sale $5000 and up. Is this normal pricing? No - there is no reason for the price going up - sounds like they were trying to pressure you into making an immediate purchase. I have read that yorkies should never be bred if they are under 5lbs but lots of the people I spoke with told me they breed their 2 - 2.5lb yorkies. I read that to do that would seriously endager and probably kill them. Just found it odd that people were bragging about it. No - Yorkies that small should Neverbe bred.!!!!! Is it normal for yorkies to be over 10 pounds and still be healthy?Yorkies can be over 10 lbs as our breed has breed down from the original size. And yes - they can certainly be healthy! Also when looking to see how the pup will turn out should I pay more attention to mom or dad ( who gets more of the genes passed down)?Genes are passed on equally from mom and dad but puppies may look more like their grandparents or aunts and uncles. Do you keep your yorkies shaved in the summer if you aren't showing?Mine are cut down as soon as they are finished unless I al planning to special them. And stay that way year round. Much easier to care for and they can just run and play like regular dogs!! Charlie |
