Jack's last gift

This is a personal story that a couple weeks ago I would have never dreamed of sharing with anyone. But the outpouring of condolences over Jack's passing makes me think you guys might appreciate it, and more, benefit from the lesson I learned from Jack today.

Ahh, where do I start? The outpouring of support and sympathy has hardly slowed since we lost Jack on Sunday. I'm overwhelmed, flattered and, if possible, even more proud of little Jack. I knew he was special, I knew he was popular, but I had no idea he genuinely touched so many lives.

I did some quick math yesterday: On the Internet alone, we've received about 500 notes of condolence. I've read every single one, sometimes two, three, four times. Each one has lifted my spirits, and...

R.I.P., Yukon Jack

Jack died today, at 3:50 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009. Born Jan. 16, 1996, he was 13.

I'm still sorta numb. It came on so suddenly. He was feeling as frisky as ever when we hopped in the car and drove to the Sunday dog meetup. He even slipped down off his doggie seat in the back, scrambled across the floor and squeezed his way around the side of the front seat to sit right next to me. He was an escape artist until the day he died.

Eddie shows a flash of aggression

I wish I was a behaviorist and could look into Eddie's wee brain and figure out what's going on. Last night at the little-dog meetup, a nice shih-tzu came up to give him a sniff, and he wheeled around and bit him right on the face, leaving a red mark dangerously close to his eye.

I was stunned. Eddie has toy-hoarding issues that I've worked hard on and successfully controlled for years, but there was no toy involved here. The other dog may have been a little pushy, but Eddie overreacted...

Not a REAL dog?

Eddie had his first solo therapy dog visit today. It was at an assisted living home. Lots of elderly. Many with Alzheimer's.

He did great and confirmed my hopes that he'll be good a this. We visited about 20 people in an hour, and he showed no signs of burnout.

The thing I love about this is there's always one highlight that leaves me all warm and fuzzy about the volunteer work. Today, it was a woman who spoke in whispers.
