Outdoors obedience: Tough, tough, tough

Today was humiliation day for Eddie. We started an obedience class called Street Smarts. The idea is to get them to recognize their basic commands outside.

We met in a strange parking lot (most of the fields still are wet and snowy) and went through our routines with planes flying overhead, cars driving by and hard cement to sit and lay on.

It's a good thing we just had this instructor in an indoor class because Eddie was pretty rough. He starts out fine, but the noises...

For most of the winter, the boys and I are in agreement as to our walk schedule. They wake me up at 10 or 11 (I work nights), and then I get as much as one hour to drink coffee and sit at the computer. They don't always like it, but that's the deal.

But as summer nears and temperatures rise, they're demanding that we renegotiate the contract. Today, they all got up barking at around 9 a.m. and stayed in the living room until I got up at 10.

Does anyone else scream and holler like a lunatic when you miss the "perfect" picture by a nanosecond?

Last night, Eddie was walking around with a blue ball and a 6" bully stick in his mouth. I was in bed, but it was perfect. I jumped up, grabbed my camera and started chasing him around the house in my skivvies.

Naturally, he thought I was playing the chase game, so he ran. My wife, sure I had finally lost it, asked "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?"...

Snowfall last 24 hours: About 2"

Despite the above stats, the sun popped out and we're having a beautiful day. Even the dogs seemed to enjoy it more than yesterday, when it was cold, windy and snowing.

Eddie sprinted through the fresh powder for his Yummy Chummy rewards....

Today I awoke late and dawdled around the computer about an hour longer than normal, and the boys weren't happy about it. Eddie sat by my side giving me "the look" until I broke down and took them on a walk.

I paid severely for the delay. What had been a nice morning turned ugly the second we walked out the door. A wispy, wet snow started falling.

Jack protested by repeatedly stopping and giving me his version of "the look" on the 50 yard jaunt to...
