| Yorkie Vaccinations Hi, I have a Yorkie puppy who is now 20 weeks. At 16 weeks, VIP petcare community clinic gave him the 5n1 and a dewormer and he was fine and still energetic. Today at 20 weeks he received the 5in1 + lepto and bordetella vaccination. He is nope really lethargic, and shivers here and there. The breeder initially told me no lepto or bordetella but the vet said he's seen Yorkies get it all the time. I called VIP Petcare and they said it is normal. Should I be worried? Again he is 20 weeks and 4.7 pounds. Thanks! |

| Hi there and welcome to YorkieTalk. It sounds to me as though your sweetie is have a bad reaction to the vaccines prayers to you and yours. Scary. Here is a recent thread about lepto, click here (2018). You'll see than any number of YorkieTalkers don't have the vaccine administered to their pups. My late senior had a bad reaction to core vaccines when she turned 13. She became lethargic and shakey; we went to the ER and she was treated there. When my Duchess, who is now five months, was just a little younger than your little one, she did get bordetalla (oral, as I recall), but we didn't get lepto. Please keep us posted on how things progress. --KarysMom . |

| Lepto has been known to cause issues in Yorkies so generally unless it is very prevalent in your area I would not get it. Also with small pups one shot at a time or it’s to much for their immune system and body. I am a fan of bordatella but I would have gotten it at a different time. I have had pups who had no issues with shots, one who gets really grumpy with a bit of pain at the shot spot and one who has to take Benadryl before and pain meds for three days. Your pup sounds like they are having some pain. I would call the vet for pain medicine.

| I don’t give combination vaccines as I believe this caused my first yorkie Troy to develop a form of encephalitis where he eventually died. There’s been research on combo vaccines and small dogs and this has been an area of concern. I don’t give lepto either as it’s not prevalent in our area and as others have said yorkies don’t react well. Bordatella we give bc we go to places with other dogs and it’s required. Groomer, kennel. And we live in a neighborhood with lots of dogs so that’s a protective measure to prevent kennel cough. Does sound like your pup is having a reaction so a quick call or trip to the vet will help you with next steps.

| My Jackson had a horrible reaction to lepto so I'll likely never again give that vaccine especially to a small dog. It seems to happen more often than not. It was scary. He like began throwing up and lost control of his back legs. I rushed him back to the vet. He has notes on his chart to never give that vaccine. He was a bigger pup too, he is 18lbs as an adult, at the time he was around 6lbs already.

| My Mike was in pain after his last vaccine that included lepto. He didn't shake though, was sleepy and didn't want to be touched until the evening that day. The bump at injection site went away after 5-6 days. We have to get the last puppy vaccine with lepto this week and I'm dreading it( vet is sure we don't need bordotella and lyme shots but need lepto. For the future I don't really understand whats the point of once-a-year lepto vaccine if research shows the immune response lasts only 3-4 months? It's scary to make a decision that might hurt your baby(( both vaccine reaction and leaving him unprotected. |

See this MAP for lepto hot spots (also attached below). And use this site to enter your county info for lepto prevalence. Bordetella is not a core vaccine and it's not recommended you get it unless necessary. I would not be getting lepto unless there is true prevalence in your area. Bordetella is also not a core vaccine and not needed except for certain dogs. See my post above for links.

| I turned down the lepto recently. It didn't seem to apply to baby Freya. I did, however, let them squirt Bordetella into her nose. |

My vet said if I took Freya to groomers--had just gone to her first grooming--Bordetella was a good idea. I said yes. | |
