| ![]() Last Tuesday I got my new 6 week old puppy names ella. After reading some of these threads it worries me that I received her at 6 weeks old. Do you think this is a major concern? She only weighed 12 oz when I took her to the vet last week. First, she seems very healthy, the vet said everythings ok. I am just concerned on what signs to look for if she has hypoglycemia? And what do I do if it happens? Secondly, I am leaving on the 18th of Dec thru to Dec 30. She will be staying with my mother while I am away, I have already taken her to her house a few times so she knows it, do you think this will damage her as a pup in any way? Thirdly, I am worried about going back to work (since I have had her I have not worked, but will be starting a job Jan 9th) I will be working 8 hours a day and am worried to leave her home affraid she might me lonely. I am able to block her off in the kitchen area with her food and toys, but still am worried about her being alone. I bought a yorkie book which says they do not like to be left alone. Please help if any of you have this same problem, I dont want to be a bad yorkie mom. Other than that reading these threads she seems to have a normal yorkie personality. She seems to want to chew on a lot of things like expensive furniture (do any of you have this problem with your pup chewing on your furniture?). She seems great at potty training I am currently using paper (she was too big for a dog litter box. Plus she ate the litter pellets when I put them down) I would really appreciate any of you helping me out with taking care of my new baby Ella. Thank you |

| ![]() My Jewels was 12 oz when I got her at 8 weeks. I gave her nutrical three times a day to help prevent hypoglycemia. You really cant miss it when they have it. The are unsteady, sleep alot, disoriented. As far as keeping her okay while you work I would get an xpen. I had one for each of my dogs when they were little and it gave them more room than a crate. Good luck they are just precious when they are little like that. Just take lots of pictures cause they get big so quick.

| ![]() Congrats on your new baby. I am not very experienced but I too picked up my 6 week old pup last Friday. I agree she was far too young, wish I had found this board before I got her. Saturday was very scary, 1st the vet gave her too many shots and I think she may have been a bit hypoglycemic. I picked up nutrical and put it in her food and also got puppy replacement milk. Be careful, once they get used to either of those, mine doesn't want her own food, she prefers to hold out for the good stuff. 8 hours seems like a long time, I may worry too much but on the days I work I make sure my husband is in and out. I know that isn't possible for everyone but so young away from mom is kinda scary. Good luck with your pup! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() First congratulations on Ella and welcome to Yorkie Talk. You will find a lot of helpful people here. Question #1. Make sure you give her Nutracal to supplement what she is eating. This will help avoid Hypo. If she starts shaking and becomes lethargic this could be a sign of Hypo. Give her nutracal and I would take her to the vet immeadiately, she is very tiny. Question #2. Haven't had any experience with this but I would make sure you go over with your Mom everything that needs to be done and what signs to looks out for regarding. Hypo. Question #3. I work part time but leave the TV on for them while I am gone. They perfer cartoon network. Bitter Apple seems to work for our little babies, How really only do like to chew on either expensive or sentimental things. Good luck. PS we like pictures, can't wait to see them of little Ella.

| ![]() Thank you all so much for all of the info. I currently soften her puppy chow with warm water and them mix in esbilac (milk suppl) is this ok? What is nutracal and where do I get it? Is it only for hypo? and how long do I give it to her for? I notice sometimes when she first wakes up she shakes a little, but I thought that was because she was cold? I am really scared about that because she does sleep a lot, although she does eat often (i keep her food out and always change it). Also what is an xpen? Not sure how to put a pic on here. Who ever had the pics of there 2 pups they are soooo cute. I just love yorkies. How did i ever live w/out one??? |

X-pen is short for exercise pen. I'm using one that is black metal...about 2 foot hight and you can shape them into any shape you want. They are in connecting panels and it folds up very nicely.

| ![]() Nutrical is a nutritional supplement with sugar in it. You can get it at petco or petsmart. You gist give a dab of it two to three times a day. I gave it to Jewels untill she hit two lbs. X pens are large pens that accordian up and you can shape them many ways to make a pen they are open at the top. I got mine at Pets supply plus.

| ![]() Welcome to YT and congratulations. You may consider a kitten as a playmate for your yorkie or another yorkie even. I have found that two are easier than one actually because they entertain each other and you can get things done. As you have discovered yorkies are very social, do get attached quickly and don't like to be alone. I do realize that most people cannot take their dogs to work with them but if you live close maybe you could come home at lunch or have a pet sitter who comes by during the day for you. As for the vaccines, your vet should never give more than one shot at a time and I am not a proponent of most vaccines so I always advise people to research over-vaccination, vaccinosis and some of the side effects and problems with it. Vaccinations should not be taken lightly and a set pre progrmmed schedule is not right for every dog since every dog is different. Good luck with your baby. |

| ![]() Hi and welcome- I too am in Michigan- where did you find the breeder? I am kinda surprised they let her go at 6wks-- our Max was very tiny when he came home and we gave him N-cal 3-4 times a day about a pea size off my finger-- he loved it- Definetly get her a play area if she will be alone for a ong period-- good luck and welcome again! |

| ![]() Welcome and congrats on your new baby. She is too young to be taken away from her mommy. I am glad to see how much you care about her. If at any time you suspect Hypoglycemia check her gums, lift her lip up on the side of her mouth and look at her gums. White or pale is a sign of low blood sugar, get some nutrical, pancake syrup, white kayro syrup in her mouth ASAP. Not a lot too much is not good either. Dip your finger in it and rub it on her gums or her tounge. Bright pink gums is a good sign. You can also add some sugar to her water BUT you MUST change it every 2 hrs otherwise it will grow bacteria and make her sick which can result into another problem. Right now you need to make sure she eats every 3-4 hrs no matter what. If she doesn't eat on her own you will need to syringe feed her baby food, the plain chicken baby food. If it gets to the point you may want to call your vet. Good luck! Irene |

| ![]() Again I cannot thank you all enough for your advice. I actually found my pup ( and I know this is wrong) but from and advertisment at a pet store) it was a privater breeder. I do not think she was a "professional" breeder, but she has 2 yorks that had pups. |

| ![]() First off, congrats on your new baby! Six weeks is a bit too early, but you're not a bad momma! I'm lucky enough that I work in a Groom Shop and Upscale Doggie Boutique so my baby can go to work with me everyday or stay home should he choose to be stubborn and not get out of bed (haha, it happens!). Everyone is right with the x-pen. It's a wonderful way to give your baby room to play, but confined enough to keep your mind at ease. And Nutrical. Very important stuff. I gave it to Bounce when he was little everyday even though he was healthy. I'm very precautious. Better safe than sorry. Good luck! You'll do fine!
