Planning to someday show... Hi, Right now I am the owner of two pet yorkies, Reggie and Kenzie, who are now 2 and 3 years old. love them to death but I bought them as pets and I am hooked on the yorkies breed!! We started leaning about show nearly 3 years ago. We started attending and reading as much as we could. My mom bought a stad poodle last year and allowed us to show him, it was a blast! Tons of work but we enjoyed every minute of it. But we were drawn to the yorkies, and sat drooling watching them comepete and be groomed. So, now I am back to researching and have decided that I will buy another yorkie for show. My hurdles...I have small children. My oldest is 22 months and I have another baby due in a month. So that is one huge problem, many breeders will not allow their dogs be placed with families of small children. We are in Canada and plan on doing CKC (Canadian Kennel Club), I am getting more and more familiar with the breeders of quality yorkies in Canada. I spoke with Laurie Hunter, from Nik Nak yorkies on the phone last week for advice. She was lovely, gave me so many tips and points in what to look for and and what to research. I was wondering if there are any good online resources to showing yorkies?? I am NOT rushing into this, if it takes well over a year to find the "right" yorkie I am not worried. I would rather wait and be informed then jump in and have a disater on my hands (being un prepared). So, I thought i would introduce myself, I have been lurking for quite some time... Carla

Hi Carla and welcome, It is not easy to show dogs with small children, the time commitment to the training and coat care is sometimes overwhelming. I showed dogs when my children were young, I would take one at a time to the shows. At some shows I was handling as many as 14 dogs. As my children got older they became very helpful. It was not their calling for life and they moved on, but I think if you ask them they both would tell you stories of the shows and the sightseeing we did while on the road. This is just what their mother did, it was my life and my all time love. Unlike other people I did not do it for the fun, to tell the truth I did it for my friends and most of all for the win!!! I admit it, it is all about winning for me. Everybody wants to win, or why else would they be there spending all that money?

I know what you mean about showing, taking care of the yorkies and having small children to take care of all at the same time. I was showing and raising yorkies before I had any kids and then finally was able to get pregnant myself - took 5 years but I finally did it. One child was not so bad, but after I had my second one and there were two toddlers in with the yorkies (I mean inside the house all together) it was impossible to keep the kids away from the yorkies. I did hire a handler which helped so she was the one that traveled. We showed for several reasons - to breed and make sure they were worth breeding, but also for the wins, friendship, focus to stay busy, and the pride that came with winning. I only showed the ones that liked the ring, which is best. They would actually get excited to show. Was it expensive - yes! Was it worth it - yes, I loved it. I had to stop though since it was too much with my kids - I was spending all my time trying to keep them seperated. Why? My daughter thought the puppies were rag dolls and kept picking them up - even the upside down hold and the hold around the neck - which scared me. I tried my best to teach her how to be gentle and how to hold carefully - didn't work. And evrytime my back was turned she was getting the dogs. So I stopped, gave my yorkies to my closest friends and now just recently returned to showing now that my kids are all grown up (24 and 21). Do I still love it - yes! Is it hard - yes! It is a family thing and my kids - I think - are very proud of our dogs, especially our wins. My son even is talking about going into the ring with his favorite. They love our yorkies! T.

Well I am glad to hear that some people have done it with having children. I know for me it is the win...lol. It was such a rush to show the stad. poodle and I learned so much, loved the social aspect. As a SAHM, I do not get out very often and I want something that I can do. my husband is also crazy about the show ring and wants to show one himself, and then we got talking about junior handling, they start as young as 3 and my little guy turns 3 next year... So far our system of safely for the yorkies and kids is working not too bad, my DS is in his play room which is gated off during the morning, the yorkies have the run of the rest of the house, during his naps they invade his space (funny just b/c it is gated off it is now the place they want to be so bad!!). In the evening we are all together but they are under supervision. My Reggie (he is the oldest yorkie he is now 4) loves my son, and will sit and watch him through the gates and has a little bed in my sons room. My son is still in his crib but will howl at night until Reggie gets in his bed. The funnier part is when DS falls asleep, Reggie leaves and comes and joins us adults...lol but then spends the rest of the night in DS room, when sleeping.

| Carla, I am the mother of 2 and one due in December, and I am here to tell you, it can be done! I think I am the only person I've ever seen waddling around the ring in maternity clothes, LOL...and I'll continue to do so until I can't get off the floor. (which by my estimation, wont be long! lol) I think yorkies and kids can be managed, and shows to me are an EXCELLENT escape from the rugrats! I grew up a "show brat" myself, drug from one show to the next my whole childhood, and though I hated losing weekends with my friends as I hit my teenage years, it was something that I will never forget, and left a love for dogs imbedded in me for life. Good luck with your pursuits, and just keep a "can do" attitude, and you will do great things!

When I reread it and thought about it it does sound funny! lol Actually to top that off, my yorkies have they pee pad box in the main bathroom. The other day I was going in to have a bath and one of the yorkies, Kenzie ran in to pee. So I waited at the door for her to finish, my husbnad was laughing when I told him I was waiting for the dog to use the bathroom. So, she runs out and just as I am about to step in Reggie, the other yorkie, darts in to use the bathroom! By then I am lauhging and the dogs are wagging their tails trying to figure out the joke, I wait for them to use the potty before I go in...lol
