Please dont personally attack me on this thread because Im not the one with the dog. It is my friend. Trust me if it was me, I would do all I could to get it to the rightful owner. It wasnt my decision not to release him to the owners.

As far as the neglect situation, the owners did come forward. My friend said they didnt put up too much of a fight to even try to keep the dog. Im not sure exactly what kind of paper work was handed in to the police. I just know of the vet report along with other things.

You are not being personally attacked. Just poking holes in your story If you would have the owners were contacted and signed the dog over to your "friend" I might have believed this but vet reports and police involvement is not how a surrender happens. Sorry~just not buying it.

One of my biggest yorkie mom fears is losing Princess. I can't imagine that happening, then someone just keeping her. That would be the same as dumping salt into my forever wounded, broken heart-as well as my daughter's and my extended family that loves her dearly.

This just happened over the weekend in Chicago. The dog that was neglected is in the care of ANIMAL CONTROL after being taken from it's owners. Again proven wrong!

Dog set loose, beaten - chicagotribune.com

By Becky Schlikerman and Rosemary Sobol, Chicago Tribune reporters
11:11 p.m. CST, December 11, 2011

The tan mutt howled and barked for hours outside her owner's new home. But Lashon Johnson and her son Lorenzo said they ignored the dog's pleas because they couldn't let her into their apartment.

Their new landlord in the East Garfield Park neighborhood didn't allow pets, Lorenzo Johnson said.

At the request of his mother, the 18-year-old let the dog his late father named Isis off the leash Saturday at their old apartment. But as the family moved its belongings two blocks to their new home using a shopping cart, Isis followed.

Neighbors said she waited in frigid weather for more than four hours. She apparently paced the sidewalk near the Johnsons' new home and was attacked just a few doors down by several kids wielding baseball bats and broomstick. Leaving a trail of bloody paw prints on the sidewalk, she returned to the Johnsons' front door.

Police found her there and charged Lashon Johnson with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Isis' story highlights the problems encountered across Chicago when it comes to animal care and resources for help.

"Sometimes, animals can be an afterthought in a situation like this" said Janice Brown, founder of Chicagoland Tails magazine and a member of the Chicago Animal Shelter Alliance. "The underlying responsibility is still that you're going to care for it. That's a non-negotiable."

Lashon Johnson — identified by police by her maiden name, Parks — said she tried. She called Animal Care and Control when the family began moving last week. But with no transportation, she was told it would take two weeks for authorities to come get the dog.

Brad Powers, assistant to the director of Animal Care and Control, said a family would never have to wait two weeks.

"If we receive a call and they're made aware to bring the animal in and they explain that's impossible, we handle that immediately," he said Sunday.

Johnson, 42, said she wasn't aware there were other shelters and organizations, such as the Anti-Cruelty Society and PAWS Chicago, to call.

But Robyn Barbiers, president of the Anti-Cruelty Society, said her organization is able to pick up animals and has heard anecdotally that 311 operators sometimes refer callers to the Anti-Cruelty Society.

"Give your animal a chance — take it to a shelter," she urged.

In the case of Isis, the dog stayed with the family until Saturday, when Lorenzo Johnson unhooked the leash and shooed her away.

"We let her loose in a bad way," he said¸ standing at his front door, bloody prints still visible on the ground. "It really hurt me to tell my own dog to get away."

Nevertheless, the dog stayed outside, barking, howling and approaching people walking on the sidewalk, neighbor Tamika Wilson, 24, said.

Police were called about 6 p.m. to the 600 block of North Drake Avenue and found several children trying to hit the dog with baseball bats and broomsticks, according to a police report. The officers followed the shepherd-terrier's bloody paw prints to the Johnson's basement apartment, where the dog began barking and scratching at the door, according to a police report.

Johnson told officers she "no longer wanted" the dog, according to the report. The officers noted that she hadn't been giving the animal water or food and had left it outside in temperatures below 25 degrees for an unidentified amount of time.

Johnson was charged with failure to comply with an animal owner's duties and cruelty to animals, both of which are misdemeanors. She is expected to appear in court Jan. 23.

The dog is currently in stable condition, according to Powers, and her injuries are not expected to be life-threatening. He declined to provide specifics, citing the criminal investigation.

Powers said he did not know if and when the dog would be available for adoption.

Nevermind who is attacking YOU. I cannot believe, that as a fellow yorkie (or any pet) owner, you are not doing everything in your power to be sure your friend does what is right. Just for a second, put yourself in the situation of the owner of the lost dog. How can you possibly think it's not your place to intervene??? What an awful Christmas these owners are going to have...let alone if there are children who love him!

The rite & ONLY thing to do is contact the proper authorities YOURSELF & tell them what happened & WHO has the dog. It does not matter that these people are your friends, they are breaking the LAW in that Legally they have stolen someones dog period. I'm sorry but I would not want friends like that . The dog was clearly well cared for & the harness thing well there are many reasons it could have caused an irritation, one instance is that just maybe the groomer put it on too tight as I have had that happen to my own dog. Some people leave the harness on the dog & would not think to check it for tightness after a grooming. Their story just does not add up & if YOU don't at least follow through & check their story out then YOU are just as guilty as they are as people here have proven to you that animal control & the police dept DO NOT work the way their story goes.
Also you may be offended but people here are only trying to Educate you on the Law so don't think you are being bashed but instead (Educated) & KNOW that your friends are NOT telling you the truth.

Put yourself in their shoes. . . what if this was your dog that for whatever reason got out and was lost, wouldn't you want the person who has him to do every thing possible to return him to you and for him to be safely back in your arms?

I have had some scares with my little ones getting out and I go crazy searching for them. I'm very thankful that I have good neighbors who assist me when it comes to getting my babies safely back home.

All of my dogs wear tags. . . 24/7 Rabies, county dog tags and an identification tag that says:
My name, phone number and " take me home" or " call my mommy" on the back.

I'm not sure how the law and animal control operates in Chicago but it seems a bit sad that more hadn't been done to reunite this pup with it's owners.

I wonder if you have first hand information of the facts. Were you there during conversations or interaction between them or if you only know what took place by what your friend told you? Did I miss the part where animal control was contacted and why was the dog not taken from your friends home. How did the police get involved? There seems to be a lot of information missing that might be helpful to those of us who are concerned about the dog and why is was not returned to it's family.

I certainly do not believe in taking something that is not yours but it looks like the owners, if they really cared, would be looking everywhere and advertising the loss of this baby. I said what I did because with so much cruelty, you would not want him to go back into a bad situation. If after awhile no one come forward, then I would try to get him into a rescue. I know we all have different opionions but I think we are all looking out for the good of the little dog. I hope if this baby was loved and took care of he is reunited with his owners. I know, like everyone else, I would be frantic if it was ours, but, I also would be looking and doing everything to find him. I could not tell from the picture about the collar but if it is true it was cutting into him, that would not happen overnite. Don't know, just hope everything turns out for this baby. If the friends took him and he didn't just wonder up on their porch, they are doing wrong to hold on to him and not do something. Do you think they took him and could be lying about him showing up at their door? Who knows nowdays. People can be something else.

This truly saddens me. I cannot believe ever loosing my dog and never having a chance to reunite because some selfish person decided to keep him. I would be a mess. What your friend is doing is not fair to this family. He is probably scared...poor baby. I agree the flesh wounds are not ok...but could the flesh wounds be a result of him being 1) freezing and 2) maybe getting stuck under something that was pulling is harness? If the family really didn't want the dog...wouldn't your friend have to go through an adoption approval process especially if the police were involved? Something isn't adding up. Look forward to an update.

sick...sick..sick......sick people. Sadly, as soon as the situation allows, they will probably do this to yet another defenseless animal. (referring to MegansMomma's news posting).

There really should be some sort of government agency that monitors people before they get their 4-legged friends. I know that is an impossibility, due to the sheer population of dogs and cats. But oh..if only.

I pray this poor thing gets a loving home.

In regard to the OP's friend's situation, that dog also deserves a loving home. Judging from the picture, the dog looks to be in good shape and well groomed (but that doesn't tell the whole story, especially if the dog's owners weren't doing everything in their power to get their furkid back). I pray this dog ends up with people who cherish it. I also pray that your friend, and you, recuperate emotionally from this. It can be really hard having this happen on your property and not knowing what to do, or unsure of the right thing to do. No judgments from me, that's for sure.
