Default Yorkie found on back porch!

I live in the Elmwood Park/Chicago area and my friend found this little guy on his back porch a few nights ago. Hes posted on Facebook, but nobody has came forward to claim him.

This poor little doggie. His harness was so tight, it was cutting into his skin. It caused him to have a flesh wound. They took him to the vet. He wasnt micro-chipped and he has an ear infection right now. He is neutered.

My friend is debating on even trying to return him to the owner due to the harness issue. Who would do that to a poor dog? How hard is it to check the tightness of a harness.

Anyway, I'll post a picture below.

What a little cutie pie. I think I would wait and see if anyone trys to find him and just not say anything about finding him. That is horrible and sounds like he has been abused. Several years ago someone put a little puppy over in our backyard. We kept him for about 2wks. and then one night someone knocked on our door and said it was their dog. We let them have him and it wasn't no time that he was hit by a car because they didn't keep him inside and take care of him. He had gotten out of their fence and someone , I guess thought we would take him. It made me furious. So, I would just let things ride out and see what happens. I would keep the little guy.

Personally, I would never post his picture on facebook. Anyone could say it was there dog. I would say Found Terrier and let the person tell you, breed, sex etc. I have seen people "pretend" to be owners and heard of bad things happening to the dogs.Reselling is huge these days. Good Luck

I isn't fair for someone to keep an animal that isn't there without first dong everything they can to try to find the owners!

A tight harness is not abuse in any way. Just a lack of knowing how to properly use it. You have no idea how long he has been missing, with time he may have outgrown the harness which could have contributed to the tightening.

I would contact animal control and put him on a found list there. I agree with Dawn about the tight harness issue. For all you know, a kid put it on and the adults didn't check before he escaped. And it may not have chafed if the dog was just lying around the house all day. It might have gotten aggravated when it was on the loose.

His weight looks good and he's been groomed recently. Somebody loved him.

I agree. Also contact your local news paper & run a found add as that's usually the 1st place people look when they loose a pet & most news papers run free found adds. Remember not everyone has a PC.

I don't think its right to keep a dog that is not yours, but, what I was looking at was the fact its possible he was abused and I would leave it up to them to try and find him. If you love your dog and its lost you are going to do anything to try and find it and its just like someone said about advertising the fact because anyone could claim him. I was just looking out for the little guy's welfare. I would certainly not keep someone's pet that they loved and cared for. I hope he is reunited with them if they really loved and cared for him. If not, he deserves a home where he is loved and cared for.

If the harness was so tight it left a wound on the skin I would say it is neglect and not just stupidity. It may be the owner is in some way not able to care for the animal properly. If they care about the dog they will put an ad in the paper. Lost and found ads are free in my area and probably in other areas as well. I wouldn't put the dog on facebook either.

For found dogs I NEVER post a picture either, especially with highly sought after breeds/breed types. Just asking for a liar to come forward.

However in this case, in all honesty I would keep the dog and just keep an eye out for "missing" ads. I would not feel bad at all keeping the dog after how it was found in such horrible condition. Although, I have seen cases were a dog goes missing for years and if found later on by devastated owners. Maybe the dog was lost a while back and has grown since :/ sad to think it's been roaming the streets or has been abused/neglected.

I would just keep him and watch for lost ads. That's just me. If he was in better condition and looked loved and had tags I'd def be looking for his home.

Most often Lost adds are not free. Found adds are free because it is the law that if you find some one elses property you are required by law to try to find the owner of the property that you have found and pets are considered property. Therefore you must either turn it into the proper authorities or run an add in the Public newspaper as everyone can have access to a news paper but not everyone has access to a computer.
Definitely Never put a pic of a pet that you have found, only a partial description.( Small dog found, Please call to Identify ) Anyone looking at found adds who has lost their small dog Will call.

I would start by putting up flyers in the neighborhood in which he was found. Contact all surrounding Vets and Animal Shelters to see if anyone is looking for him. I would also contact megansmomma to see if she could help place him. She lives in Chicago and is with YHR.. Also shodanusmc lives in Chicago and attends lots of Yorkie meetups, Maybe he can help you too. They may have some different suggestions. Good Luck to you.

Looking for an update on this little guy.

It is very important that you actively look for this dogs owner whether you feel that he was properly care for or not. I can state for a FACT that it does not take much for a lost dog to look totally disheveled after being lost for even an hour.

In the City of Chicago there are laws in place that state you need to actively look for the dogs owner. They are probably frantically looking for their lovely dog. Stating that the harness was on too tightly and his hair looking a little unkempt does not make a neglected pet.

Almost 2 years ago my son was having an issue with his truck in the morning and had the gate open and I didn't realize it. I let all three of mine outside they all took off. They were only missing for less than an hour but looked like orphans when I finally found them. If someone would have judged me by their appearance I would have never got them back. Many people here on YT argue that collars w/tags are dangerous (I firmly believe this untrue) and other have argues that chipping is cruel (nope). Many other even argue that their dogs are never left unsupervised. All of these things do not make a bad pet owner.

I've check Craigslist for Lost dog ads as well as Found dog ads and have found nothing. If you are not going to actively look for the owner you need to bring him to the local shelter and drop him off. There is ZERO CHANCE he will be euthanized so please do not give this as a reason for not allowing him the chance to be reunited with his owner.
