Thor's Human Donating Member | I can see why an airline would prefer kids rather pets, because two strange kids who don't get along are probably not going to try to kill each other. Or at least, they have no chance of succeeding. That being said, I do find the fees ridiculous. For me, the biggest drawback is the vet letter, which in itself would probably $150 here. People can get on flights with deadly diseases that can be communicted to other PEOPLE, so what's the big deal with dogs, when there is unlikely to even be another dog on the flight? Well, I guess they should be healthy enough to fly. Still, a letter within 30 days of flight seems like major overkill to me.

| Yeah. I am flying through airtran this summer and I am bringing my pup with me. They charged me 69 dollars EACH WAY and I emailed them saying why does it cost me more to fly a 2 pound dog than it is to fly myself and he is basically like a carry on. They were saying that they were liable for dogs just as much as humans and blah blah blah. I paid 44 dollars each way for a ticket for myself. This is ridiculous. |

When we were looking for apartments, we knew we would be getting a puppy in the near future, so we were looking for pet friendly ones. One place told us that they didn't allow pets unless for medical reasons. The girl said that this policy didn't really matter, because you can have it deemed that you need your pet for "stress relief" or something else and with a doctor's note they HAD to let you have whatever kind of pitbull or tiny furbutt you wanted. I wonder how easy it is to register the dog as a service dog? What kind of service do they perform? Adding to the cuteness of society?

Also, I have NEVER been charged anything to register my dog with an airlines, etc. I inform the airlines at the time of ticket purchase that I travel with my service dog. Almost ALWAYS we are given the seats with extra bulkhead, so he can lie down in front of me comfortably. I merely show his certification card (its a picture I.D. of him and the name of the organization that trained us) when I check in at the airport. It is illegal to be charged extra for him to accompany me or to be identified & registered as a service dog in the airlines' records, so I'm not sure what the quote of $350 is based upon. PLEASE do NOT try to register your companion animal as a certified service dog if that is not, in fact, the truth. We still have such a long way to go in achieving animal rights through the legal system (and I'm referring to ALL aspects of animal rights, not only the rights of disabled persons to use a service animal) and trying to beat the system in this way only creates more resistance, ill-will, and difficulty for others. Please think beyond your own desires in this situation and think more broadly, to how YOUR actions will affect others. Nothing we do as individuals remains in isolation. Ultimately, we're all connected and what we do impacts others. Sincerely, Joan Zatorski, Tucson, AZ Last edited by zatorskijoan; 06-21-2009 at 08:20 AM. | Our current apartment charged us a one time fee of $350. I guess that means when we leave, I don't need to repair the cabinets she chewed?? J/K

By the way, I have heard of getting a dog registered for "emotional needs", which I understand is kind of like a service dog, but not completely. I'm not sure if this applies in every state.

| Actually I did not have to pay for the cabinet in the bathroom as long as it is obvious that your dog did it. This was at my last apartment and they were amazing thou. I also paid a onetime fee ($500). |
